¿Te gustaría ser estéticamente "perfecto"?, ¿qué es para ti la fealdad?
Tally a sus dieciséis años desea serlo y tiene la posibilidad de lograrlo porque en el futuro en el que ella habita, operarse para lucir perfectos, es una obligación (quitando lo obligatorio, no suena muy distinto a la realidad de ahora, ¿cierto?).
Traición es el primer libro de una saga de ciencia ficción compuesta por cuatro libros titulada originalmente "Los feos" que nos presenta una historia donde las operaciones estéticas representan igualdad, democracia y estatus. En ese futuro que pareciera ser una utopía, pero que realmente se inclina más a lo distópico, se cree que existe una democracia por el hecho de que todos al cumplir los 16 años pueden dejar de ser "feos" gracias a la operación gratuita a la que los somete el gobierno. La persona ya operada y con una nueva imagen "perfecta", puede irse a vivir a la ciudad de la belleza y disfrutar de beneficios que les ofrece gobierno.
Tally, nuestra protagonista, desea ya que llegue su momento para operarse y poder irse a vivir a la ciudad de la belleza, pero faltando poco tiempo para su operación entabla una amistad con Shay, una chica de su edad que se acepta tal y como es, no desea ser "perfecta" y tiene ideas revolucionaras. Shay huye a la ciudad "El humo", un lugar donde un grupo de "imperfectos" se niega a operarse y hacen su vida normal apartados de la sociedad.

Tally, at sixteen years old, wants to be "perfect" and has the possibility to achieve it because in the future in which she lives, having surgery to look perfect is an obligation (except for the obligatory part, it doesn't sound very different from our current reality, right?)
Betrayal is the first book in a four-book science fiction saga originally titled "The Uglies" that presents us with a story where cosmetic operations represent equality, democracy and status. In this future that seems to be a utopia, but that really leans more towards the dystopian, it is believed that there is a democracy because everyone can stop being "ugly" at the age of 16 thanks to the free operation to which the government submits them. The person already operated and with a new "perfect" appearance, can go to live in the "city of beauty" and enjoy the benefits offered by the government.
Tally, our protagonist, is already looking forward to her surgery and wants to go to live in the city of beauty, but shortly before her operation, she befriends Shay, a girl her age who accepts herself as she is, does not want to be "perfect" and has revolutionary ideas. Shay runs away to the city "The Smoke", a place where a group of "imperfect" people refuse to undergo surgery and live their normal lives apart from society.
Al Shay irse al Humo, Tally enfrenta un dilema y es incluso amenazada por los gobernantes, quienes le dicen que debe ir en busca de Shay y ser una espía para descubrir que sucede exactamente en el Humo o se queda imperfecta para siempre.
El tema suena interesante, ¿cierto?
La verdad es que la primicia del libro es buena, el querer tener belleza y alcanzar la perfección es una de las búsquedas inalcanzables para muchos seres humanos quienes dedican su vida a esto, llegando incluso a hacer locuras y perderse así mismos en el camino por algo que realmente como tal, no existe.
Hoy día la perdida de identidad por buscar imitar estereotipos es muy común, nuestros adolescentes cada día sufren más por querer ser quienes no son, por no desarrollar su esencia, aspirando tal vez a ser aceptados o populares. Por esto que menciono, pienso que este libro (y la saga en general), a pesar de que salió añosa atrás, no está lejos de la realidad y puede servir de ayuda para invitar a la reflexión a muchas personas.
No voy a decir que el libro es una obra maestra, creo que para la temática que aborda podía haber ofrecido mucho más, pero tiene una crítica social bien planteada y todo un mundo por descubrir mientras leemos. Como todo libro que entra en el género juvenil, tiene sus clichés, pero en este caso no creo que sea nada que particularmente dañe la historia.
With Shay leaving to the Smoke, Tally faces a dilemma and is even threatened by the rulers, who tell her that she must go in search of Shay and be a spy to find out what exactly is going on in the Smoke or she will remain imperfect forever.
The plot sounds interesting, doesn't it?
The truth is that the premise of the book is good, wanting to have beauty and achieve perfection is one of the unreachable quests for many human beings who dedicate their lives to this, even going as far as doing crazy things and losing themselves along the way for something that does not really exist as such.
Today, the loss of identity by seeking to imitate stereotypes is very common, our teenagers suffer more and more every day for wanting to be someone they are not, for not developing their essence, aspiring perhaps to be accepted or popular. Because of this, I think that this book (and the saga in general), despite the fact that it came out years ago, is not far from reality and can help to invite many people to reflect.
I will not say that the book is a masterpiece, I think that for the subject matter it deals with it could have offered much more, but it has a well presented social criticism and a whole world to discover while reading. Like any book that falls into the juvenile genre, it has its clichés, but in this case I don't think it's anything that particularly damages the story.
Traición es un libro de lectura sencilla, como para leer tranquilamente en las tardes. Su temática puede parecer fuerte, pero se desarrolla de manera amena y fácil de entender. Quienes lean este libro posiblemente terminen cuestionándose una que otra cosa acerca del concepto de belleza y los intereses ocultos que la mayoría de gobiernos (por no decir todos...plop) tienen.

Betrayal is easy to read, a book to read quietly in the afternoons. Its plot may seem strong, but it is developed in a pleasant and simple to understand style. Those who read this book will probably end up questioning a thing or two about the concept of beauty and the hidden interests that most governments (if not all...plop) have.
