This is the first novel I read about the Vietnam War, I learned about it when I was reading a book on how to learn to write stories, and there they made reference to this book by the American writer Tim O'Brien, almost immediately I looked for it on the internet and it was available in ePub format, I downloaded it and then transferred it to my Kindle. It's from Titivillus publishing house.
The author is a veteran of the Vietnam War, therefore he was an eyewitness to all the horror and cruelty of a senseless war that robbed many Americans of their youth. O'Brien tells us about the dilemma he went through when deciding to join the army to fight in the war and especially his experiences in combat where he saw many of his companions die.
Este es la primera novela que leo sobre la guerra de Vietnam, llegó a mí cuando estaba leyendo un libro sobre como aprender a escribir relatos y allí hacían referencia a esta obra del escritor estadounidense Tim O´Brien, casi de inmediato la busqué en internet y estaba disponible en formato ePub, me dispuse a descargarla para luego pasarla a mi Kindle. Es de la editorial Titivillus.
El autor es un veterano de la guerra del Vietnam, por lo tanto, fue testigo presencial de todo el horror y crueldad de una guerra sin sentido que le arrebató la juventud a muchos estadounidenses. O´Brien nos cuenta el dilema que vivió para decidir alistarse en el ejército para combatir en la guerra y sobre todo sus experiencias en combate donde vio morir a mucho de sus compañeros.
The author begins by narrating about the objects that his companions carried, they had those objects as amulets as a memory of their family, girlfriends, home, but also, those objects carried emotions and feelings that were always with them, such as fear, anxiety, shame, and rage, it is from there that O'Brien came up with the name of his novel.
The book is easy to read, there are some time jumps in the development of the narrative, but they are totally predictable and it is only about memories and evocations, mainly at the end. In this work, the author tries to reconnect with those friends who fought with him and who unfortunately died, even after the war in very tragic circumstances, O'Brien reveals his deepest feelings in relation to everything he experienced in the war.
El autor comienza narrando diciendo sobre los objetos que llevaban sus compañeros, ellos tenían esos objetos como amuletos como un recuerdo de su familia, de su novia, de su hogar, pero también, llevaban emociones y sentimientos que siempre estaban con ellos, como el miedo, la ansiedad, la vergüenza y la rabia, es de allí que O´Brien toma el nombre de su novela.
El libro es fácil de leer, hay algunos saltos temporales en el desarrollo de la narración, pero son totalmente predecibles y se trata solo de recuerdos y evocaciones, principalmente al final. En la obra el autor trata de reencontrarse con aquellos amigos que lucharon con él y que desafortunadamente murieron, incluso después de la guerra en circunstancias muy trágicas, O'Brien nos revela sus sentimientos más profundos con relación a todo lo vivido en la guerra.
It is a novel written with a first-person narrative and when you read it the author makes you feel in his shoes, you quickly feel empathy for the characters and for the narrator who is the protagonist of the story. The reader is easily hooked on the events narrated and cannot help being excited by what is described. O'Brien tells us about fear, that paralyzing feeling that invades the minds of soldiers in a war, and how men try to hide it, but that it is always there, and the only thing they can do is close his eyes, and bear it.
There is an aspect that the author deals with in this work that was very revealing for me, O'Brien exposes it in a masterful way through a traumatic experience he had with the death of one of his friends, here he tells us about how something that happened can be narrated with details that perhaps were not real, but that said story is more true than the truth itself.
Es una novela escrita en primera persona y cuando la lees el autor te hace sentir en sus zapatos, sientes empatía rápidamente por los personajes y por él narrador quien es protagonista de la historia. El lector se engancha fácilmente a los acontecimientos narrados y no puede evitar emocionarte ante lo descrito. O'Brien nos cuenta sobre el miedo, ese sentimiento paralizante que invade la mente de los soldados en una guerra, y como el hombre trata de ocultarlo, pero que siempre está allí, y lo único que puede hacer es disimular, cerrar los ojos y soportarlo.
Hay un aspecto del que trata el autor en esta obra que fue para mí muy revelador, O'Brien lo expone de una forma magistral por medio de una traumática experiencia que tuvo con la muerte de uno de sus amigos, aquí él nos cuenta como algo que pudo haber sucedido se puede contar con detalles que quizás no ocurrieron, pero todo en conjunto es más verdadero que la propia verdad.
I highly recommend this work, for me, it was very emotional, I felt all kinds of feelings, including laughter and sobs, not only that, but it taught me many things related to what courage and cowardice are, important aspects related to writing are revealed in addition to the horrors of war. Do not stop reading this work, you will not regret it.
I want to finish with a reflection, and it is that after reading The things they carried, I realize that those men also "brought many things", as the author says, things that had weight, a weight that can be felt and that never goes away.
Recomiendo ampliamente esta obra, para mí fue muy emotiva, con sentimientos de todo tipo, incluyendo risas y sollozos, no solo eso, sino que me enseñó muchas cosas relacionadas con lo que es la valentía y la cobardía, también me reveló aspectos importantes relacionados con la escritura además de los horrores de la guerra. No dejes de leer esta obra, no te arrepentirás.
Quiero terminar con una reflexión, y es que después de leer Las cosas que llevaban los hombres que lucharon me doy cuenta que esos hombres también se "trajeron muchas cosas", como dice el autor, cosas que tenían peso, un peso que se siente y que nunca desaparece.
