La aparición de este personaje es muy breve y debido a esto no tenemos demasiada información sobre él.
Aunque considero que tenemos suficientes datos. Es un personaje importante para la trama pues contribuye y es esencial para que Bran Stark logre llegar hasta el hasta el muy mencionado Cuervo de Tres Ojos.
Conocemos a este personaje en Tormenta de Espadas, en el Bosque Encantado en las tierras de Mas Allá del Muro; cuando Samwell Tarly, Ely la hija de Craster y su hijo recién nacido habían logrado escapar del Torreón de Craster que ahora tomado por los insurgentes de la Guardia Nocturna.
Por el camino son atacados por un grupo de espectros, pero son salvados prontamente por un misterioso jinete que montaba un enorme alce, acompañado de una bandada de cuervos, el jinete misterioso al ver a Samwell fue "hermano" lo que nos daría a entender que quizás Manosfrías fue un miembro de la Guardia Nocturna.

On the way they are attacked by a group of wraiths but are promptly saved by a mysterious rider riding a huge elk, accompanied by a flock of ravens, the mysterious rider upon seeing Samwell was "brother" which would give us to understand that perhaps Coldhands was a member of the Night's Watch.

Según nos cuenta Sam; eran tan pálido como un muerto, llevaba guantes y sus manos eran negras, frías como un tempano de hielo (de alli que Sam le pusiera el nombre de Manosfrías), sus dedos parecían rocosos y quebradizos pero duros como una piedra y a diferencia de los espectros controlados por los Otros, mejor conocidos como los Caminantes Blancos, los ojos de Manosfrías eran negros y vacíos, hablaba perfectamente la legua común, cosa que lo diferenciaba aún más del resto de espectros y por supuesto montaba un enorme alce de gran cornamenta.
Estaba siempre acompañado por una extraña bandada de cuervos que no se comportaban de forma natural, Manosfrías parecía tener control sobre ellos a pesar de que no se comunicaban de ninguna forma o no parecían hacerlo.

Manos frías indicó a Sam que del otro lado había unas personas y que por favor les indicara el camino para cruzar hasta ese lado de la puerta donde él se encontraba.
Así Sam lo hizo y a quien Manosfrías estaba buscando no era otro más que al mismo Bran Stark. Asi fue como el grupo de Bran compuesto por Summer, Hodor, Jojen Reed y Meera Red guiado por Manosfrías continuaron su viaje hasta el norte del Muro donde se encuentra el Cuervo de Tres ojos.
En el trayecto descubren que Manosfrías llevaba un tiempo matando a los hombres que desertaron de la Guardia Nocturna. Todos detectaron de inmediato que había algo anormal en él, incluso Summer el gran lobo Huargo de Bran detectaba la magia que manaba del cuerpo de Manosfrías, Bran describe el olor de Manosfrías como algo ligeramente podrido y sangre seca, tenía la voz débil y áspera; no había dudas de que aquel hombre que los guiaba hasta su objetivo ya estaba muerto.
Con el tiempo los viajeros se dieron cuenta de que Manosfrías tampoco bebe ningún tipo de líquido, no come absolutamente nada, tampoco le afecta para nada el frio del norte y cuando hablaba, de su aliento no manaba ningún vapor o calor. Es luego el mismo Manosfrías quien nos confirma su situación, explicando que cuando el corazón deja de latir el cuerpo se pone pálido como la leche y la sangre acumulada en las extremidades se vuelve espesa y se coagula haciendo que las manos y pies se vuelvan negros dándonos a entender con esta explicación de que él esta consiente de su condición de espectro.
Manos frías es el único espectro conocido que al parecer no está sujeto de ninguna forma a la voluntad de los Caminantes Blancos , al estar a punto de llegar a la cueva del Cuervo de Tres ojos son atacados por unos espectros que se encontraban dormidos bajo tierra, Manosfrías contuvo el ataque mientras el grupo escapaba hacía la cueva, al entrar en la cueva Bran insistió en que debían ayudarlo pero una hija del bosque quien se encontraba esperándolos dentro le dijo que no, ni él ni los espectros podrían entrar en ese lugar y que la vida de aquel hombre se había perdido hace mucho tiempo y por ello no debían temer su muerte.
Más allá de esto no conocemos más de este personaje y no sabemos aún si volveremos a saber de él en algún otro momento, y sigue siendo uno de los personajes más misteriosos de la saga, su origen está sujeto a mucho debate y a pesar de que no soy de basarme en teorías, en la segunda parte de esta entrada hablaremos de las más famosas suposiciones hechas por los fans acerca de este personaje
