The book “Sapiens - A Brief History of Humankind” by Yuval Noah Harari is not a brief book in fact, reading more than 450 pages was not an easy for me, especially if this brief history of humankind spreads over 2.5 million years.
Yuval Noah Harari explained human evolution as a historian, the book answers several questions which any person who is interested in history would like to ask. However, after reading the book, it might raise several other questions, as the author admits that evidence of written history is limited vis-à-vis human existence on this planet; that is why he also heavily relied on biological, archaeological, and technological information to create some missing links. In fact, I think his whole books hinges on Darwin’s theory of evolution. The Darwin’s theory based on systematic studies tells that human evolution was a nature’s choice but not a divine act. It might disappoint some of his readers with religious inclination, however, it is a must-read book.
According to the book Humans first evolved in East Africa about 2.5 million years ago from an earlier genus of apes called Australopithecus, which means ‘Southern Ape’. About 2 million years ago, some of these archaic men and women left their homeland to journey through and settle vast areas of North Africa, Europe, and Asia.
According to the book the current humans are descendants of homo sapiens as other species vanished from the planet, the book explains that around 500,000 years ago the Neanderthals evolved in Eurasia, while Sapiens evolved 200,000 years ago in East Africa.
