Queridos lectores de Hive, el día de hoy traigo la reseña de un libro que llegó a mí a través de alguien más. Aunque no es mi género literario preferido decidí darle una oportunidad a algo más «ligero» para descansar de todos esos libros repletos de carga emocional. Aunque me equivoqué al pensar que no trataba temas profundos, no me arrepiento de haberlo leído.
Dear Hive readers, today I bring you a review of a book that came to me through someone else. Although it's not my favorite literary genre, I decided to give something "lighter" a chance to take a break from all those emotionally charged books. Although I was wrong in thinking it didn't deal with deep themes, I don't regret reading it.
Se trata de Todo lo que nunca fuimos, la primera novela de una bilogía escrita por Alice Kellen. Ambos libros relatan la vida de Leah y Axel, pero están enfocados en dos etapas diferentes de sus vidas, por lo que prefiero hablar de ellos de modo particular. ¡Vamos a ello!
It is Everything We Never Were, the first novel of a bilogy written by Alice Kellen. Both books tell the life of Leah and Axel, but they are focused on two different stages of their lives, so I prefer to talk about them in a particular way. Let's get to it!
La trama - The plot
Leah es una joven que sufre un cambio drástico en su vida: sus amados padres ya no están, productos de un accidente de tráfico. Este hecho tan traumático y devastador la hizo cambiar por completo su forma de ser, volviéndola irreconocible incluso ante sus propios ojos. Ellos tuvieron una muerte física, pero Leah pareció morir con ellos. En su cuerpo solo queda una sombra de ella que no es capaz de reír, llorar, amar, ni siquiera vivir realmente.
Leah is a young girl who suffers a drastic change in her life: her beloved parents are gone, products of a car accident. This traumatic and devastating event made her completely change her way of being, making her unrecognizable even before her own eyes. They died a physical death, but Leah seemed to die with them. In her body there is only a shadow of her that is not able to laugh, cry, love, or even really live.
Es debido a este cambio que cuando las circunstancias del destino hacen que termine viviendo con el que fue el amor platónico de su vida, no siente lo mismo que hubiese sentido si hubiese sido la misma de siempre. Una chica alegre, emocional, vivaz, desbordada de emociones y sentimientos.

Axel, que la conoce de pequeña y es el mejor amigo de su hermano, se preocupa de que Leah ya no sea capaz de vivir, que el dolor de su pérdida termine consumiéndola para siempre y sea incapaz de salir a flote para continuar, echando por la borda sus sueños, su futuro, su vida. Es por esto que mientras está de inquilina en su casa se propone ayudarla a afrontar la realidad, aunque no es una tarea fácil, ya que Leah quiere permanecer en ese estado de somnolencia que la envolvió por miedo al dolor que está escondido en su interior.
Axel, who has known her since she was a child and is her brother's best friend, worries that Leah will no longer be able to live, that the pain of her loss will end up consuming her forever and she will be unable to pull herself up by her bootstraps to continue, throwing away her dreams, her future, her life. This is why while she is a tenant in his house he proposes to help her face reality, although it is not an easy task, since Leah wants to remain in that state of somnolence that enveloped her for fear of the pain that is hidden inside her.
Mi opinión - My opinion
Este libro me agradó porque está construido paso a paso, resulta coherente que relate cada proceso que viven los personajes ya que una persona no cambia de un día para otro ni deja una etapa para entrar en otra como si de saltar a otros extremos se tratara.
I liked this book because it is built step by step, it is coherent to relate each process that the characters go through because a person does not change from one day to another or leave one stage to enter another as if it were about jumping to other extremes.
La autora sabe sumergir al lector en la vida de una chica que ve hacerse añicos la realidad que conoce, dejándole un gran vacío y una nueva realidad que, le guste o no, es la que hay. Esta chica nos relata cómo se siente y cómo ha reaccionado desde el accidente de sus padres, a la vez que nos regala anécdotas que ayudan a introducir al lector aún más en la historia y que sirven de punto de apoyo para reflexionar acerca de alguna experiencia o enseñanza.
The author knows how to immerse the reader in the life of a girl who sees the reality she knows shatter, leaving her with a great emptiness and a new reality that, like it or not, is the one that exists. This girl tells us how she feels and how she has reacted since her parents' accident, while at the same time she gives us anecdotes that help to introduce the reader even more into the story and that serve as a point of support to reflect on some experience or teaching.
Aunque todo parece girar en torno a Leah, Axel es otro de los personajes principales, un hombre aparentemente realizado, satisfecho y feliz con la vida tranquila y monótona que lleva, aunque mientras ayuda a Leah a «ordenar su vida» como él mismo dice en una de sus páginas, la suya parece irse desordenando y convirtiéndose en un desastre, con lo cual se da cuenta de que aunque cree tenerlo todo, hay algo que le falta.
Although everything seems to revolve around Leah, Axel is another of the main characters, a seemingly fulfilled man, satisfied and happy with the quiet and monotonous life he leads, although while he helps Leah to "order her life" as he himself says in one of his pages, his own seems to be getting messy and turning into a disaster, with which he realizes that although he thinks he has everything, there is something he lacks.
Ambos personajes tienen problemas que afrontar y decisiones que tomar, cosas que se hacen evidentes cuando conviven el uno con el otro, un impulso que necesitaban para que, nuevamente, sus vidas den un giro, demostrando que cada día hay cosas nuevas que vivir, descubrir y enfrentar.
Both characters have problems to face and decisions to make, things that become evident when they live with each other, an impulse they needed so that, once again, their lives take a turn, showing that every day there are new things to live, discover and face.
El libro está narrado en primera persona, en capítulos que se alternan entre Leah y Axel, por lo que podemos ver desde sus perspectivas todo lo que ocurre alrededor y sobre todo, dentro de ellos mismos. Son los encargados de hacernos saber de sus pensamientos, sentimientos, experiencias, anhelos, sueños, miedos… Cosas que los acercan más al lector y los hacen realistas.
The book is narrated in first person, in chapters that alternate between Leah and Axel, so we can see from their perspectives everything that happens around and above all, within themselves. They are in charge of letting us know about their thoughts, feelings, experiences, longings, dreams, fears... Things that bring them closer to the reader and make them realistic.
Aunque no me sorprende que dos personajes del sexo opuesto tengan que compartir una misma casa por un período de tiempo, ya que es un elemento que se repite demasiado en los libros de romance, hay muchas cosas que me gustaron de él: el hecho de que cuenten todo con detalle, aportando en algunas páginas recuerdos que ayudan a responder ciertas dudas o motivaciones del presente; la actitud que adoptan los personajes frente a los altibajos, dejándonos valiosas enseñanzas; lo realista y bien construida que está la historia, aún con ciertos elementos de «historias de películas».
Although it does not surprise me that two characters of the opposite sex have to share the same house for a period of time, since it is an element that is too often repeated in romance books, there are many things I liked about it: the fact that they tell everything in detail, providing in some pages memories that help to answer certain doubts or motivations of the present; the attitude adopted by the characters in the face of ups and downs, leaving us valuable lessons; how realistic and well constructed the story is, even with certain elements of "movie stories".
Todo está narrado con un toque de nostalgia, de pérdida, de intensos sentimientos que traspasan las páginas y llega al lector. Me agrada que se enfoquen también en otros personajes, con vidas propias, sueños y voces, que son necesarios e importantes para terminar de conformar el entorno donde se desenvuelven los protagonistas.
Everything is narrated with a touch of nostalgia, of loss, of intense feelings that go beyond the pages and reach the reader. I like that they also focus on other characters, with their own lives, dreams and voices, which are necessary and important to finish shaping the environment where the protagonists develop.
En cuanto a sus enseñanzas, hay muchas cosas que podemos sacar y aplicar a la vida real, no en vano vemos a dos personas enfrentándose a los golpes que les da la vida, que aunque duelen, son necesarios para llevar una vida mejor, ser consciente de lo que nos rodea, como esas personas que infravaloramos o aquello que tenemos y no apreciamos como se debe hasta que lo perdemos.
As for his teachings, there are many things that we can take out and apply to real life, not in vain we see two people facing the blows that life gives them, that although they hurt, they are necessary to lead a better life, to be aware of what surrounds us, like those people we undervalue or what we have and we do not appreciate as it should until we lose it.
A mi modo de ver, es una historia que no tiene desperdicio. Con la cual reír, sentirse identificado y quizá hasta llorar. No creo que, si se toma enserio, el drama intenso que sale de sus páginas no alcance al lector.
In my opinion, it is a story that has no waste. With which to laugh, feel identified and maybe even cry. I don't think that, if taken seriously, the intense drama that comes out of its pages will not reach the reader.
