The Metamorphosis: A Surreal Alienation by Franz Kafka | Analysis | (ENG) (ESP)

Without a doubt, The Metamorphosis is Kafka's most famous work and in which we can perceive the authentic Kafkaesque narrative voice. The story tells us the story of Gregorio Samsa, a merchant who, suddenly wakes up and realizes that he is an insect, presumably a beetle.

The desperation of his parents to know that their son hasn't gone to work and the fact that he keeps the door of his room closed are noted in the first pages of the book. The psychological abuse by his boss, a business manager, the cries of his sister, and the screams of his mother is only the beginning of this work that gradually narrates the alienation and complete dissociation of our main character.

In this short novel, themes of interest abound encrypted in Kafka's mind, selfishness, frustration, alienation, laziness, abandonment and existential crisis are some of them. It is a complex work that clearly shows us the probably disturbed psyche of the author, with a dark and surreal plot but also with clear influences around the time lived in that moment.

However, many of us know that Kafka is a subject of study by psychologists due to his original prose and the extravagant events presented in his work. Franz Kafka himself didn't want to see his work released, he only wrote out of catharsis, to free all his demons, but these have probably been many.

Kakfa's work is in essence dark, disturbing and concise, without frills but with enough aesthetics to fluidly narrate an absurdity, an absurdity that takes us to the inhospitable tides of the author's subconscious. This, therefore, is one of those authors to whom I would like to know what happened in his mind to create works of such quality, perfect works, with so many symbolisms that entire works have been written trying to analyze each story, each phrase and therefore the Kafka's mind.

Continuing with the story of this novel, it is necessary to speak of the symbolic and encrypted way that the author tries to show us the perception of his world and the criticism he makes towards the world in which he lived. In the second part of the novel Samsa has already been discovered as an insect, the rejection by his parents doesn't take long and the only one who takes care of our beloved beetle is his sister who little by little also ends up getting fed up with him.

Here we can appreciate the selfishness of the Samsa family and their false interest at the beginning of the work for their welfare. The real concern was the economic well-being of the family who counted on him but now, knowing the useless state of Samsa, they decide to disown him.

Having said this, in the third and last part of the work we can appreciate the complete helplessness of Gregorio Samsa. Oblivion, which is a true living death. The family falls into an economic crisis because, as I said before, the pillar or real pater families was Samsa, but being in a state of work futility and its importance is meaningless. The heartbreak coming from his family begins to affect our beetle.

The family decides to rent rooms in order to have a certain income. And the decisive moment of the work is due to them. At one point, her sister Greta plays the violin for guests, entertaining them with her music, but Samsa loved the music her sister played. Wanting to better appreciate the notes produced by the violin, Samsa approaches where her sister and the guests were, not caring about their appearance, declaring their death in a certain way.

After this fact and the strong rejection by the terrified guests, Samsa decides to go into exile, a true abandonment to death.

A sad story that has a lot of reality masked, subtly turning it into a roman à clef or novel with a key. This text is one of the most important works of universal literature, not only because of the plot but also because of the complex symbolism that underlies its pages. A desperate mind making catharsis through a pen and paper, creating the prototype of a psychological novel but from a more surreal point of view, more intimate for Kafka and perhaps this is the main reason why the author didn't want to see his plays released.

This is undoubtedly another of my favorite authors and has had a strong influence on me. Not only for his works but for his life in general that I discreetly capture in all these pages. This is an indispensable work in any collection, one of his books that should be read by anyone, since they feed the thousand and one ways that we can perceive the world. That is what the reader-writer relationship is about, living a thousand lives, delving into the bowels of a consciousness that has not been ours but that is entrusted to us with words life, and an experience.
