Ian Pears is an English writer, art historian and journalist who achieved worldwide notoriety with his first novel An Instance of the Fingerpost translated into several languages and who has his own style as he experiments with different narrative structures.
This is what he does in a masterful way in An Instance of the Fingerpost where he presents four consecutive versions of the same events but with different characters trying to lead the reader to discover the truth by himself.

The Raphael Affair, the novel I am discussing today, is the first in the series known as Mysteries of Art History where the main characters are the detective and historian, specialized in art, Jonathan Argyll and two members of the contemporary art team in Rome, Flavia di Stefano and General Taddeo Bottardi.
El Caso Rafael, la novela que hoy les comento, es la primera de la serie conocido con el nombre misterios de las Historia del Arte donde los personajes principales son el detective e historiador, especializado en arte, Jonathan Argyll y dos integrantes del equipo de arte contemporáneo de Roma, Flavia di Stefano y el General Taddeo Bottardi.
The plot of the novel is set in Rome, which demonstrates Ian Pears' affection for art and especially for what Italy, and especially Rome, represent for art itself.
It all begins with a surprising discovery that is, in turn, the consequence of an attempted robbery: Jonathan Argyll, a young English art historian is arrested by the police when he tries to break into a small church trying to evade all the surveillance systems.
When he is questioned by the police about his strange behavior, he tells a story that is no less strange: according to his version, on the altar of that church and according to his meticulous research that has brought him from his native England to Italy, there is a portrait of a modest painter of the early seventeenth century.
But what makes it so special is that, presumably underneath that portrait, there is nothing less than an authentic female portrait by Raphael Sanzio, universally known as Raphael.
After being sold and resold more than once, the portrait was auctioned off in London, supposedly by the people who, after stealing it, discovered the truth.
The Italian government, without disclosing the news of the theft in order not to alter the security systems that protect all the Italian artistic heritage, offers a very high sum decided at any cost to recover the work. This attracts the attention of art experts (and inexperienced but unscrupulous traffickers).
At that moment begins the real police plot led by Taddeo Bottardi as head of the police investigation unit for the protection of artistic heritage, his collaborator Flavia Di Stefano and a distracted but sharp Jonathan Argyll who are involved in a surreal story, in a real labyrinth of intrigues, between political rivalries, economic interests, love for art, suspicions of corruption, envy and jealousy pushed to the extreme, whose exit is full of traps so insidious that endanger their own lives.
La trama de la novela está ambientada en Roma, lo que demuestra el afecto de Ian Pears por el arte y sobre todo por lo que Italia, y en especial Roma, representan para el arte misma.
Todo inicia con un sorprendente hallazgo que es, a su vez, la consecuencia de un tentativo de robo: Jonathan Argyll, un joven historiador del arte inglés es detenido por la policía cuando intenta introducirse en una pequeña iglesia tratando de eludir todos los sistemas de vigilancia.
Cuando es interrogado por la policía sobre su comportamiento demasiado extraño cuenta una historia que no lo es menos: segn su versión en el altar de esa iglesia y de acuerdo a sus minuciosas investigaciones que lo han traído desde su natal Inglaterra hasta Italia, hay un retrato de un modesto pintor de principios del siglo XVII.
Pero lo que lo vuelve tan especial es que, presuntamente debajo de ese retrato, hay ni más ni menos que un auténtico retrato femenino de Rafael Sanzio conocido universalmente como Rafael.
Después de haber sido vendido y revendido más de una vez ese retrato es rematado en Londres supuestamente por las personas que luego de robarlo han descubierto la verdad.
El gobierno italiano sin dar a conocer la noticia del robo para no alterar los sistemas de seguridad que protegen todo el patrimonio artístico italiano ofrece una suma altísima decidido a cualquier costo a recuperar la obra. Lo cuál llama poderosamente la atención a expertos (e inexpertos pero inescrupulosos traficantes) del arte.
En ese momento comienza la verdadera trama policial liderada por Taddeo Bottardi en su condición de jefe de la unidad de investigación policial para la protección del patrimonio artístico, su colaboradora Flavia Di Stefano y un distraído per agudo Jonathan Argyll que se ven envueltos en una historia surrealista, en un verdadero laberinto de intrigas, entre rivalidades políticas, intereses económicos, amor por el arte, sospechas de corrupción, envidias y celos empujados al extremo, cuya salida está llena de trampas tan insidiosas que ponen en peligro sus propias vidas.
The Raphael Affair is a tense, gripping book, written with extraordinary skill, (perhaps with a narrative level inferior to that of An Instance of the Fingerpost) The Raphael Affair reveals a different writer, an author who with An Instance of the Fingerpost knew how to delight our literary palate perhaps at a level similar to that of Umberto Eco in The Name of the Rose, a master of refined suspense, with a full mastery of the narrative resources that make a good thriller an authentic detective novel, where suspense, art history, intrigue and suspense are mixed with the refinement of observation and an ironic gaze.
El Caso Rafael es un libro tenso, apasionante, escrito con extraordinaria habilidad, (tal vez con un nivel narrativo al inferior al de La Cuarta Verdad).
El Caso Rafael nos revela un escritor distinto, un autor que con La Cuarta Verdad supo deliciar nuestro paladar literario tal vez a un nivel similar al de Umberto Eco en El Nombre de la Rosa, un maestro del suspenso refinado, con un pleno dominio de los recursos narrativos que hacen de un buen thriller una auténtica novela policíaca, donde suspenso, historia del arte, intriga y suspenso se mezclan con el refinamiento de la observación y una mirada irónica.
