Introduction

Everything is fcked is a book by Mark Manson, who rose into Number 1 New York Times and international bestselling author with his work, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck. I have been a fan of his work since I read his orange covered book, this time let me share to you about this blue covered book.

Manson divides his book into 2 parts, here are the contents:
Part I: Hope
Chapter 1 The Uncomfortable Truth
Chapter 2 Self-Control is an Illusion
Chapter 3 Newton’s Law of Emotion
Chapter 4 How to Make All Your Dreams Come True
Chapter 5 Hope is Fcked

cked
Chapter 6 The Formula of Humanity
Chapter 7 Pain Is the Universal Constant
Chapter 8 The Feelings Economy
Chapter 9 The Final Religion

My Favorite Chapter

Chapter 1: The Uncomfortable Truth

In the first chapter of the book, Manson already slaps us with his unpleasant doctrine: one day, we and everyone we love will die. And beyond a small group of people for an extremely brief period of time, little what you say or do will ever matter. And that is the Uncomfortable Truth of Life.

Chapter 2: Self-Control is an Illusion

Second chapter is my favorite, in this chapter Manson depicts our mind as a car. He call it the “Consciousness Car” which is driving along the road of life. There are two occupant inside the car, The Thinking Brain, and The Feeling Brain. The Thinking brain represents our conscious thoughts, our ability to make calculations and reasoning. The Feeling Brain on the other hand represents our emotions, impulses, intuition, and instincts. We always assumes that the one driving the car is our Thinking Brain, but Manson argues, the one who is holding the steer was our Feeling Brain, all along. Our Thinking Brain was always been on the passenger seat, having no control whatsoever to what we decide to do at that moment, what drives us was always emotions, impulses, intuition, and instincts, we rationalize our decision after we decide what we wants to do, hence self-control is an illusion.

My Least Favorite Chapter

Chapter 9 The Final Religion

Honestly reading the last chapter makes me shudder, the idea of AI and science will dictates our future even on psychological level seems believable, not really far off from reality, yet unpleasant.

Afterthought

It’s always fun reading Mark Manson’s works, even in this book he write a lot about philosophical figures (Nietzsche, Kant, Freud, Plato, etc.) in an engaging way. He made it almost like a biography of them, but he insert a lot of his fictions that makes their stories relatable to the readers. He made us learn about how those figures thinks, so their idea can easily be understood. There’s a lot of insights of how the world should have works we can concur, but there’s also some ideas that makes me shivers.
