Paulo Coelho "Veronika Decides to Die" 1998 /

Paulo Coelho's second book I listened to was Veronica Decides to Die. I love this book. Despite the fact that a few days have passed since I listened to it and the fact that I have already started listening to another book, there is a pleasant aftertaste.

For many, it is no secret that I was a psychiatrist by my first education. Perhaps because of this, I will forever remember this book as a place where the fine line between mental norm and pathology is beautifully illustrated. Normally, I don't quote from the book, but there is a wonderful parable in this book that I want to start this message with:

A powerful sorcerer, wishing to destroy the kingdom, poured a decoction of a magic potion into the source from which all the inhabitants drank. As soon as someone took a sip of this water, and he went crazy.
In the morning, all the inhabitants drank this water, and every one went mad, except for the king, who had his own personal well for him and his family, and this well was located where the sorcerer could not get. The alarmed king tried to call his subjects to order by issuing a series of decrees on safety and health measures, but the police and inspectors managed to drink the poisoned water and considered the royal decisions absurd, and therefore decided not to comply with them.
When the country learned about the royal decrees, everyone decided that their ruler had gone mad and was now giving meaningless orders. With shouts, they came to the castle and began to demand that the king abdicate the throne.
In desperation, the king was about to lay off his crown when he was stopped by the queen, who said:
Let's go to that spring and drink from it too. Then we will become like them.
And so they did. The king and queen drank the waters from the source of madness and immediately went into nonsense. At the same hour, their subjects abandoned their demands: if the king is now showing such wisdom, then why not let him continue to rule the country?
Calm reigned in the country, despite the fact that its inhabitants behaved quite differently from their neighbors. And the king was able to rule until the end of his days.

This book is a great example of the fact that after being admitted to a psychiatric hospital, life not only does not end, but on the contrary has every chance to become much more interesting. People who live with the label "crazy" do not need to take into account the views of others, and such people get a kind of social permission to do whatever they want and they wanted to spit on all the limits and restrictions.

It is interestingly described that "The happier people are, the not happier they become." This statement describes the main problem of many people who constantly live only by dreams and plans, doing nothing to get closer to their realization.

Throughout the book, the formation of desires in the main character is traced, who gradually from the state of "complete" apathy passes the way to a person who values every moment of his life. Of course, death is necessary here. Although the ability to be indifferent to the opinions of others and the "right" to aggression still played, perhaps the most important, primary role in this reincarnation. All, no more words about the main storyline, I do not want to stall.

The book perfectly describes examples of patients feeling their illnesses. In my opinion, the best described panic attacks in Marie. Although the description of depression and schizophrenia in other characters are also exemplary. Also, such extravagant modern methods of torture/treatment as ECT and insulin-convulsive therapy are described in great detail.

Also, quite interesting is the theory of Dr. Igor, on the basis of which he wrote his dissertation. I think that this theory contains not only an interesting literal meaning, but also a much deeper philosophical (esoteric) meaning. As far as I understand, "Awareness is presented as a tool needed to recover from mental illness."
