Great stories must have an ending: Let's talk about After You by Jojo Moyes

¡Hola, Comunidad de Hive!

Hello, Hive Commnunity!

I realized that a few posts here and there I have mentioned to you about After You; the sequel to the hugely successful Me Before You written by Jojo Moyes, one of my favorite books; so you can imagine how excited I was when I had the opportunity to have both books in physical form.

After You, brings us to Louisa Clark after the six months she spent at Will Traynor's side, the man who changed her life in such a short time and in that same time he left. After an accident in her life she feels that she is again at the same point in her life; so that has her in a basement of a church in a support group, she will meet Sam Fielding a paramedic who can understand her perfectly, also a figure belonging to Will's past will appear; and all this will be a powerful formula to give her life a turn around.

In this book we get the view of Lou's life after Will's death, in this post there are spoilers so if you haven't read this book you know... I feel like we see a Lou lost and being ordinary as if her life is just passing but she is not on that same train. As a reader I feel like the success of Me Before You was for the author maybe an incentive for her to continue the story but I feel like it was too much.

I have mixed feelings with this book and being very honest I don't like it, I feel that it is not what the story deserved... Of course the appearance of Will's daughter is impressive but I feel that things were not carried in the best way; at the same time it seemed to me a longer book than it really is, and that's because I feel that the story was too long.

Individually I feel that the story ended in the first one, Me Before You, I feel that chapters could have been added where Lou's life would be shown afterwards, something short and that would have been the end point... However the decision was different and I feel that everything was carried in a bad way because there is still a third book, called I Am Still Me.

Lou's character I feel is lost in this story, it is perceived as if they were two different people; what happens at the same time is that we have such a particular story as Lou and Will; that it becomes overwhelming the quick change of essence... I like Sam but I feel that the romantic relationship with Lou could not have been more forced, zero spontaneous.

Really this book for me was completely unnecessary in many ways, as I say simply placing a few scenes at the end of Me Before You was enough to give readers a book that wasn't true to what we had in the previous book. I feel that Me Before You was a beautiful story full of nuance and feeling and After You doesn't do a bit of honor to this in my opinion. Now honestly it's not that it's a 100% bad book it's just not what I expected, but I don't regret reading it either because the story isn't bad it just feels like it's not our beloved Lou, and of course the characters evolve but that it lost its essence is something I definitely didn't like. There was a lot of potential and it was not well exploited in my point of view.

I would like to clarify that this is the first time I speak a little negative about a book, I mean that for another reader it may have been the perfect continuation but from my point of view it was not. However it's not a bad book, it just wasn't how I imagined it.

Espero que les haya gustado este post. Nos leemos pronto.
