Yes, I know, it's been a long time since I've written anything about the books I've read, and meanwhile their pile on my desk is growing, growing, growing... So I'm going to try to unpile it fairly quickly :) First up will be another of Perry Mason's many cases, namely 'The Case of the Mythical Monkeys'. |
| Niestety, sprawa – jak to często bywa u Gardnera – jest problematyczna, bo po takim czasie od lektury (a czytałem ją pod koniec, o zgrozo, lutego!) niewiele się już pamięta – są to (bardzo dobre, co prawda) czytadła, których głównym celem jest dostarczenie krótkotrwałej i wciągającej rozrywki na czas, na przykład, podróży, ale które z reguły nie zapadają głębiej w pamięć. Ta książka nie jest pod tym względem wyjątkiem. |
Unfortunately, the case - as is often the case with Gardner - is troublesome, because after so much time after reading it ( as I was reading it at the end of, gosh darn it, February!) one doesn't remember much - these are (very good, admittedly) pulp reads whose main purpose is to provide short-term but engaging entertainment for the duration of, say, some travel, but which generally don't sink deeper into the memory. This book is no exception in this respect. |

Tym razem była to sekretarka pewnej poczytnej pisarki, która miała w jej imieniu załatwić pewne sprawy związane z ekranizacją. I wszystko byłoby dobrze, tylko w strasznej ulewie pomyliła drogę, auto ugrzęzło w błocie, musiała szukać noclegu w najbliższej chacie, a rano zamiast gospodarza znalazła w niej trupa, i to zupełnie obcego. Co gorsza, wróciwszy, odkryła, że pracodawczyni zniknęła bez śladu, a w jej mieszkaniu panował straszliwy bałagan. |
And what is Perry Mason up to this time? As in many cases, a young and attractive woman comes to his law office, whereupon it turns out that her problem is much more complex than originally expected. This time, it was the secretary of a well-read female writer, who was supposed to handle some film adaptation matters on her behalf. And everything would have been fine, if only in a terrible downpour she hasn't taken the wrong route, her car hasn't got stuck in the mud, she wasn't forced to look for accommodation in the nearest cottage, and in the morning, she hasn't found a corpse of complete stranger instead of her host being alive. To make matters worse, when she returned, she discovered that her employer had disappeared without a trace and her flat was a terrible mess. |

| Gardner, jak zwykle, przygotował nam zawiłą, zaplątaną intrygę z licznymi zwrotami akcji, w której Perry Mason wraz ze swoją ekipą mają wiele okazji do popisania się przenikliwością, drobiazgowością i oczywiście znakomitą znajomością przepisów prawa. A ostateczne rozstrzygnięcie powinno czytelnika usatysfakcjonować. |
Gardner, as usual, gives us an intricate, tangled intrigue with numerous twists and turns, in which Perry Mason and his crew have many opportunities to show off their insight, thoroughness and, of course, their excellent knowledge of the law. Also, the final outcome should satisfy the reader too. |

| Zalety: trzyma w napięciu, rozwiązanie nie jest (przynajmniej dla mnie) oczywiste, intryga dość oryginalna. Plus oczywiście realia świata przedstawionego, czyli mini-podróż w czasie i przestrzeni. Wady: to, co zwykle u Gardnera – schematyczność konstrukcji utworu, szybkie wypadanie z pamięci. |
Pros: it keeps you hooked, the solution is (at least for me) not obvious, the intrigue quite original. Plus, of course, the reality of the world depicted, i.e. a mini-trip through time and space. Cons: the usual Gardner things - schematic structure of the novel, fast falling out of memory. |
