Today, I am bringing a novel by Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey, to my blog. It was written in 1798 and published in 1818. This novel has been adapted into several films and television series, including the recent BBC series and the 2007 film adaptation by Andrew Davies.
Resumen
La novela narra la historia de Catherine Morland, una chica de 17 años que viaja por primera vez a Bath, Inglaterra, bajo la compañía de unos acomodados amigos cercanos a sus padres, el Sr. y la Sra. Allen. Catherine es amante de las novelas góticas, por lo que ocupa demasiadas horas a la lectura lo que ha ocasionado el desarrollo de una imaginación sin límites, alterando en ocasiones la realidad de las cosas. En su estancia en Bath conoce a Isabella y a Jhon Torpe, aunque se hace rápidamente amiga de la muchacha, no puede encontrar nada en común con su pretendiente Jhon Thorpe, al contrario, lo considera grosero. Paralelo a esta amistad, hace buenas relaciones con Henry Tilney y a su hermana Eleanor, su amistad con ellos y una serie de malos entendidos ocasionan que sea invitada a pasar una temporada en la abadía de Northanger, hogar de los Tilney.
The novel tells the story of Catherine Morland, a 17-year-old girl who travels for the first time to Bath, England, in the company of some well-to-do friends close to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen. Catherine loves gothic novels, so she spends too many hours reading, which has caused the development of limitless imagination, sometimes altering the reality of things. During her stay in Bath, she meets Isabella and Jhon Thorpe; although she becomes fast friends with the girl, she cannot find anything in common with Jhon; contrarily, she considers him rude. Parallel to this friendship, she makes good relations with Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor; her friendship with them and a series of misunderstandings cause her to be invited to spend a season at Northanger Abbey, home of the Tilneys.
Personajes
Catherine: Es la protagonista de la historia, aunque no es descrita en la historia como alguien hermosa e intelectual, es muy graciosa y amable. Su característica principal es su extremada imaginación.
Henry: Es el protagonista de la historia, es el segundo hijo de los Tilney, un clérigo muy servicial que llama la atención de Catherine.
Eleanor: Es la hermana menor de Henry, es una persona muy amable, pero sin voz ni voto en su familia.
James: Es el hermano mayor de Catherine, asiste a la universidad donde conoce a su amigo John Thorpe; está enamorado de Isabella y hace todo lo que esta a su alcance para lograr atraer la atención de la muchacha.
John: Es el hermano de Isabella, un muchacho egocéntrico y grosero, siente que todo el mundo gira en torno a él, le encantan los caballos y salir a pasear.
Isabella: Se convierte en la mejor amiga de Catherine en Bath, sobre todo por su gusto por las novelas góticas, sin embargo, es una muchacha algo envidiosa y poco leal.
Catherine: She is the story's main character; although she is not described as someone beautiful and intellectual, she is amusing and kind. Her main characteristic is her extreme imagination.
Henry: He is the story's protagonist, the second son of the Tilney family, and a very helpful clergyman who attracts Catherine's attention.
Eleanor: Henry's younger sister is very kind but lacks any say or influence within her family.
James: Is Catherine's older brother; he attends college, where he meets his friend John Thorpe; he is in love with Isabella and does everything in his power to attract her attention.
John: Isabella's brother, a self-centered and rude boy, feels the whole world revolves around him; he loves horses and walking.
Isabella: She becomes Catherine's best friend in Bath, mainly because of her taste for gothic novels; however, she is a somewhat envious and not very loyal girl.
Comentarios
La historia me pareció divertida y muy entretenida, de hecho, la protagonista no tiene nada de especial, no la describen bonita, más bien como una persona común, sin interés por el estudio, infantil y con un carácter ingenuo, totalmente opuesta a las demás chicas de los libros de la autora. Catherine muestra su gusto por las novelas góticas que eran el boom de la época y se destaca por su gran imaginación y carácter bondadoso. Aunque a veces el carácter de Catherine era desesperante por la facilidad con que era manipulada, vi como sus acciones no tan correctas la hicieron madurar, entonces se ve un proceso de crecimiento.
Me gustó la valentía que demuestra Catherine al no ocultar su fascinación por las novelas y no lo oculta, al contrario, a quien conoce inicia su tema de conversación hablando de sus libros favoritos, haciendo mucha referencia a The Mysteries of Udolpho. En esa época cualquiera que leyera novelas se consideraba como una persona poco interesante. Eras más atractivo o culto si te encontraban leyendo algún tema político o noticias. Además, era común que se pensara que las novelas solo eran para lectura de las mujeres. Con estos argumentos, la autora quiso hacer hincapié en el nuevo genero de novelas que estaban teniendo auge en la época y como era de llamativo para los jóvenes.
I found the story funny and very entertaining the main character is nothing special; she is not described as pretty, more like an ordinary person without interest in studying, childish and a naive character, opposite to the other girls in the author's books. Catherine shows her taste for the gothic novels that were the boom of the time and stood out for her extraordinary imagination and kind character. Although Catherine's character was sometimes frustrating because of the ease with which she was manipulated, I saw how her not-so-right actions made her mature, so you see a process of growth.
I liked Catherine's courage in not hiding her fascination for novels, contrary, whoever she meets, she starts her topic of conversation by talking about her favorite books, making a lot of references to The Mysteries of Udolpho. In those days, anyone who read novels was considered an uninteresting person. You were more attractive or cultured if you were found reading some political topic or news. In addition, it was common to think that novels were for women to read. With these arguments, the author wanted to emphasize the new genre of novels booming at the time and how appealing it was to young people.
