The book I read was "City of the Sun", by Khaled Hosseini, its first publication was on May 22, 2007.
The book portrays the lives of two Afghan women, and the oppression of women's rights in the country during the Taliban's advance and rule in Afghanistan.
The first protagonist is Mariam, who grew up having to deal with her mother's cruel truths and her father's rejection. After her mother's death, Mariam is forced to marry very young to a widower, who at first was kind, but later began to mistreat her as soon as he realized she wasn't getting pregnant, starting to blame her. As the book progresses, he abuses, beats and humiliates her daily.
The second protagonist is Laila, born nineteen years after Mariam, she was raised in a loving home, with parents who always encouraged her independence and education. Until she loses her family in a bombing, and her boyfriend moves out of the country with his parents. After the bombing in her house, Laila, as the only survivor, wakes up a long time later at the neighbors' house (Mariam and Rashid) detail: she is pregnant with her teenage boyfriend. And faced with this situation, she accepts the proposal of Rashid (who is Mariam's husband) to become his second wife.
Laila gives birth to a baby girl, Aziza, who is raised by her mother and Mariam. But Rashid doesn't like the child, as he wanted a boy.
Throughout the book, Rashid mistreats the two women, with humiliation and physical aggression. Thus, they unite in pain and difficulty and resist day after day.
Final
In one of the attacks, Laila lands a punch in Rashid's face and the two roll slapping the ground. Until Rashid starts hanging Laila and then Miriam hits him with a shovel and kills him.
In the end she accepts her sentence and is shot on a football field, under the angry eyes of thousands of men. Laila, on the other hand, finds her teenage boyfriend and flees to Pakistan. Later, after the fall of the Taliban regime, the two returned to Kabul, rebuild an old orphanage and set up a school. In the end Laila becomes a teacher.
I didn't find it easy to read, there are a lot of Afghan slang that I didn't know what it means. But apart from that, I highly recommend this book, it moved me from beginning to end, everything they went through and faced day after day serves as inspiration. I was very sad with the ending, but it showed reality. It was difficult to summarize this book as there are details for all the events and many twists!

O livro retrata a vida de duas mulheres afegãs, e a opressão dos direitos das mulheres no país durante o avanço e domínio do Talibã no Afeganistão.
A primeira protagonista é Mariam, que cresceu tendo que lidar com as verdades cruéis ditas por sua mãe e com a rejeição do pai. Após a morte de sua mãe, Mariam é obrigada a se casar bem jovem com um viúvo, que no começo era amável, mas depois começou a maltratá-la assim que percebeu que ela não engravidava, começando a culpá-la. Com o decorrer do livro, ele a maltrata, bate e humilha diariamente.
A segunda protagonista é Laila, nascida dezenove anos após Mariam, ela foi criada em um lar amoroso, com pais que sempre incentivaram sua independência e educação. Até que ela perde sua família em um bombardeio, e seu namorado se muda para fora do país com os pais. Após o bombardeio em sua casa, Laila como única sobrevivente acorda muito tempo depois na casa dos vizinhos (Mariam e Rashid) detalhe: ela está grávida do namorado adolescente. E diante dessa situação, ela aceita a proposta de Rashid (que é o esposo de Mariam) para se tornar sua segunda esposa.
Laila da à luz a uma menina, Aziza, que é criada pela mãe e por Mariam. Mas Rashid não gosta da criança, pois queria um menino.
No decorrer do livro, Rashid maltrata as duas mulheres, com humilhações e agressões físicas. Assim, se unem na dor e dificuldade e resistem dia após dia.
Final
Em uma das agressões, Laila acerta um soco na cara de Rashid e os dois rolam aos tapas no chão. Até que Rashid começa a enforcar Laila e então Miriam acerta uma pá em sua cabeça e o mata.
No final ela aceita a sua sentença e é fuzilada em um campo de futebol, sob os olhares raivosos de milhares de homens. Já Laila, reencontra seu namorado de adolescência e foge para o Paquistão. Tempos depois, após a queda do regime Taliban, os dois retornaram a Cabul, reconstroem um velho orfanato e montam uma escola. No final Laila se torna uma professora.
Não achei a leitura fácil, há várias gírias afegãs que não sabia o que significa. Mas tirando isso, super recomendo esse livro, me emocionou do começo ao fim, tudo o que elas passaram e enfrentaram dia após dia serve de inspiração. Fiquei muito triste com o final, mas mostrou a realidade. Foi difícil resumir esse livro, pois há detalhes para todos os acontecimentos e várias reviravoltas!
