Un cuento, un recuerdo y un autor
A story, a memory and an author.
My mother told many fairytales to my younger sister and I, I remember that mother did not read them, she knew them by heart and told them in a very special way, I remember that she made many expressions on her face and imitated the characters and us we were impressed and laughed. But today I want to recall a particular story that was one of the ones we liked the most, I mean La Cucarachita Martínez y el Ratón Pérez, by the Venezuelan writer Antonio Arráiz.
La Cucarachita Martínez y el Ratón Pérez pertenece una colección de cuentos de un libro de Arráiz llamado Tío Tigre y Tío Conejo y es importante señalar que, aunque esta es su obra más popular, sin embargo, no son historias originales de su autoría, sino una recopilación de cuentos cuyos orígenes provienen al folklore de las tribus africanas que llegaron a América durante la época colonial. Algo parecido a lo que hicieron los hermanos Grimm en la cultura alemana, la gente recuerda muy bien los cuentos de estos últimos, pero se han olvidado o nunca han oído hablar de las obras de Antonio Arráiz.

La Cucarachita Martínez y el Ratón Pérez belongs to a collection of stories from a book by Arráiz called Tío Tigre y Tío Conejo and it is important to note that, although this is his most popular work, however, they are not original stories of his authorship, but a collection of stories whose origins come from the folklore of the African tribes that came to America during the colonial era. Something similar to what the Grimm brothers did in German culture, people remember the tales of the latter very well, but they have forgotten or never heard of the works of Antonio Arráiz.
Quería hoy escribir sobre este cuento también porque un día como hoy en 1903, nace Antonio Arráiz quien fue encarcelado en la cárcel la Rotunda por órdenes del dictador Juan Vicente Gómez y estuvo allí durante siete largos años, pero en la cárcel aprendió varios idiomas y escribió varias de sus obras.
Today I wanted to write about this story also because on a day like today in 1903, Antonio Arráiz was born, who was imprisoned in La Rotunda prison on the orders of the dictator Juan Vicente Gómez and was there for seven long years, but in prison he learned several languages and wrote several of his works.
Hay muchas versiones de La Cucarachita Martínez y el Ratón Pérez, pero la de Arráiz es la mejor, esta historia se trata de una cucarachita que se volvió millonaria porque se encontró un mediecito (25 centavos de bolívar de los años antes de la devaluación), ella es víctima de calumnias y chismes de los animales “hembras” que envidiaban su fortuna. Todos los animales “machos” querían casarse con ella, le hacían ver sus cualidades especiales y le prometían villas y castillos, pero la cucarachita Martínez decidió casarse con el Ratón Pérez quien no tenía nada que ofrecerle más que su amor. Pero no voy a contar el cuento, y mucho menos el final.
There are many versions of La Cucarachita Martínez and El Ratón Pérez, but the one from Arráiz is the best, this story is about a little cockroach that became a millionaire because a little half was found (25 centavos de bolívar from the years before the devaluation), she is the victim of slander and gossip from the "female" animals who envied her fortune. All the "male" animals wanted to marry her, they made her see her special qualities and promised her villas and castles, but the cockroach Martínez decided to marry the Mouse Pérez who had nothing to offer her other than his love. But I'm not going to tell the story, much less the ending.
Es un cuento en que se hace mención de una gran cantidad de animales pertenecientes a la fauna venezolana, el estilo del autor sarcástico, pero también poético y su narrativa tiene una frescura infantil que agrada al lector y el cual recomiendo leer. Yo he leído tres versiones con el nombre del autor, pero no tengo duda que la que aparece en la Antología del cuento venezolano de Guillermo Meneses, es fiel a la original.
It is a story in which mention is made of a large number of animals belonging to the Venezuelan fauna, the author's sarcastic style, but also poetic, and his narrative has a childlike freshness that pleases the reader and which I recommend reading. I have read three versions with the author's name, but I have no doubt that the one that appears in the Anthology of the Venezuelan story by Guillermo Meneses is faithful to the original.
