¿No crees..?

ENGLISH

Taking some boxes down from the cupboard, some objects fall down..... Boom!... Crash!... Pow!... Arnold helps me to pick up the things while I thank him and I separate one of the two boxes I took. There was the puzzle I had bought a year ago with 42,000 pieces. I, Carlos Alfonzo, as well as Arnoldo were addicted to puzzles of many pieces, the last ones we had done were one of 5000 and another of 10000 pieces. But, for this new moment the most important thing was to solve this new challenge, for that we met at my house, after a long time without seeing each other. It was the enjoyment of my first sabbatical year of college. The triumphs were always shared in these matters.

We spent a week trying to solve the riddle of the 42,000 thousand piece puzzle, but to no avail. It was an exotic landscape of Scotland showing an old house on the shore of a loch.

On the seventh day, we were sitting on the floor with our arms crossed and resting on the walls of the living room. We were taken by surprise that night, smoking like crazy, thinking out loud, and shouting out our greatest achievements in solving many puzzles.

We drank beers. A drowsiness came over us, between alcohol and tobacco delights late into the night. We began then in an emphasis of gods to lucubrate philosophies about puzzles and life. Arnold began to talk about how this new puzzle resembled his life, he was 42 years old and had not yet married, he did not even have an informal relationship on the horizon. He feared that his weariness with his unresolved life was resembling the end of these seven days of the puzzle. Me, I let out a few laughs... Ha... Ha... Ha... And I said, at least the pieces of the puzzle are there, but your problems are in the air, they are ethereal. Ring... Ring... Arnoldo's cell phone rang. It was his brother worried about his father's car, not him.

On my way back I started to make conjectures on the subject as well. Come to think of it, I also have a similarity with this puzzle. It resembles my wife, I have tried to put it together like a jigsaw puzzle, and while I put 100 pieces in, I fail 99 times. It is as if each person were a puzzle and if each piece were her ideas, her thoughts. To be able to see the image well, it is necessary to place all the pieces in their exact place, it is like the harmony that the teeth must have between each pinion of a machine. We all assemble our lives like a puzzle, each idea is added to the others, and all of them together give identity.

Arnoldo interrupted me, reading some text messages, and added. Sometimes, life doesn't have time to put all the pieces together, and when you look at yourself in the mirror you look like a fright, a total zombie, knowing you are a fake of something internal, incomplete. That argument wrinkled my heart, partly for him, but partly for me. For the loss of my firstborn in a traffic accident. Then, I told Arnoldo that this incident also resembled a tactic I used in one of the 10,000-piece puzzles I put together, where I replaced some difficult pieces with blanks. Then relating the ones I had around, and by default the stragglers were taking their rightful place. The bad memories should be replaced by good ones related to the fact, I reinforced all the best memories of my son and I valued them more strongly. Like ideas in the brain, like files in the pc, death must be replaced by life, that bad file must be erased from your pc, from your memory and replaced by beautiful things. A car horn sounded in the street, I looked out of the window and it was my neighbor who was late and drunk. Arnoldo looked for two more beers and I prepared some tuna sandwiches.

We were playing chess, philosophizing about related ideas. Arnoldo would state one and I would respond with another. I told him, life requires more patience... Don't you think...? We served our sandwiches and sat down at the kitchen table, without making any noise, my wife and children had been asleep for quite some time. Arnoldo argued, they both pursue a single goal, they must be finished someday. They must be completed in order to see the essence of those lives captured.

These were recurring themes, I was graduating from philosophy school and Arnold had dropped out in his eighth semester. His girlfriend had stood him up on the day of the ceremony.

Arnoldo continued to bring new similarities. He said that this girlfriend who stood him up, he could never figure out her personality, was incongruent in many of her decisions. I interrupted him... Sure... He took a long drink... And continued talking... Yes, now that I think about it, she was like the drawing on the box, blurry and inaccurate. With her you couldn't put ideas together, how to relate a thought... in short she was nothing like what she showed outside of her being. I reminded her of the ego studied in college classes, we become so self-absorbed by what others assume about us, that we end up becoming real Frankensteins. Remember that you, me, her, the others are putting together their puzzles too and many are incomplete, denatured, missing pieces. Arnold shouted, "Eureka, of course, many are missing pieces. I remember, I put together another one of 10000 where some pieces were missing, I went crazy looking for them, I was really affected by that fact.

I told him that I remembered that season, where I was grumpy and didn't want to talk to anyone. Arnold continued. This event is the same as when one cannot solve things in life, we look bad, we even tend to get thinner. Just like life, the pieces must be there on the table, they can't be missing, because we will most likely end up committing suicide. It's those things that we find no apparent solution to in life. After finishing my sandwich I asked him what had happened with the puzzle and the missing pieces. Arnoldo put a hand to his jaw, and told me with an emphatic tone, that he never found them. We were silent for more than five minutes, I picked up the dishes, cutlery, washed them and put them away, I looked at my wristwatch and told Arnoldo that it was already too late, he nodded with his face and said goodbye.

One night the following week, my cell phone rang while I was getting ready to sleep, it was a text message, the sender was Arnoldo's father, informing me that Arnoldo had committed suicide.
