La Cúspide I [ENG - ESP]

As I climbed I noticed the immense burden the others were carrying, but we were all seeking the same end, to reach the pinnacle; a place far from civilization that had once been normal.

I had escaped the virus for 2 years, but when the food supply was dwindling we decided to start going outside in search of anything we could devour. We had heard of some humans becoming cannibals before, I'm not going to lie to you, those rumors had me terrified to the point that I would rather die from the contagion than become dinner for my companions.

That is how my life had been, I did not know that human society of the XXI century of which only photos and historical books remain, it is likely that that generation has contributed to the ailments that we live today. Death took over the planet, the high temperatures ended up killing a third of the world's population, the rest died from this nefarious virus. Only 1% of the total number of humans that managed to survive is protected by The Peak, a protected area that is 5 times larger than the territory occupied by the old New York City.

Many animals eventually became extinct, which is why the proliferation of serious plagues of insects and rodents has reached an unbearable point. God had created a world with a perfect balance, but the hand of man had ended the hopes I had of being born into a world like the one my ancestors lived in.

That's what I think, as I climb to the only destination where I could be safe. But trying to enter The Peak could also mean death, many of the infected were waiting in the dark to devour the healthy ones after false rumors argued a possible link between the flesh of healthy humans and the ultimate cure for the virus. The whole group of people with whom he lived together left in search of a better life, although access to The Peak was not guaranteed.

Those who managed to reach it, had to spend long periods of quarantine and after that, wait to receive an entry permit that, unfortunately for many, sometimes did not even arrive. Even with such a discouraging scenario, it was impossible for us to stay in the unsophisticated bunker we had built, so we had no choice but to look for a better place to live.

It was clear to me that if I did not manage to enter that place, my only destiny and my only way out would be suicide. That is why I lightened my load, none of those old rags would serve me in the long walk that awaited me. I saw many people faint and stay on the road, but I could not stop so I continued until it was possible for me to walk and I only stopped for water which I had to buy at an excessive price with Hives, the international currency that was established after the fall of the world economy.

People were distributed in groups of nomads, that served to protect us from possible threats but on the other hand increased the risk of hiding in the crowd possible infected. That is why when they spent the night I slept very little and for periods of less than an hour.

While I was thinking about how little I had slept since my departure from the bunker, a gray cloud covered my face, it was that place called The Peak, a well-lit place that dazzled me at first. There was a security belt around it which made me presume that it was impossible to access it illegally. A strong smell of alcohol invaded the atmosphere, which I assumed was the disinfection I had heard so much about, meanwhile thousands of people of all ages and races were patiently waiting to enter the summit, but no one was going to prepare us for what was to come.

To be continued...
