A few days ago, I saw the publication of my friend @estefania3 about her painting classes and as the platform gives for everything, I want to tell you about my experience with this part of the creative and imaginative right hemisphere doing:

Hace días, vi la publicación de la amiga @estefania3 sobre sus clases de pintura y como la plataforma da para todo, quiero comentarles mi experiencia con esta parte del hemisferio derecho creativo e imaginativo haciendo: Un mándala educativo.

In education (at least in my time) teaching was passive; I remember that we only did workshops, exams, and the occasional exhibition. I didn't participate in extracurricular activities. My mother never had time or creativity for that, so I got around and learned only passively.

Técnicas y estrategias de enseñanza En educación (al menos en mi época) la enseñanza era pasiva; recuerdo que solo hacíamos talleres, exámenes, y alguna que otra exposición. En las actividades extracurriculares no participaba. Mi madre nunca tenía tiempo ni creatividad para eso, así que fui sorteando y aprendiendo solo de manera pasiva.

Nowadays, with the arrival of the pandemic and the migration to virtual platforms, teachers have had to use new strategies (in my case) to be able to assess the knowledge acquired on a specific subject.

Actualmente con la llegada de la pandemia y la migración a las plataformas virtuales, los maestros han tenido que valerse de estrategias novedosas (hablo de mi caso) para poder evaluar los conocimientos adquiridos sobre un tema en específico.

But do these strategies work for adults? Well, I thought not, and I am glad to be wrong because in studying some specialisations and diploma courses, I have come across some very new teaching strategies that have amazed me.

Pero ¿Estas estrategias sirven para los adultos? Pues pensaba que no, y me alegra estar equivocada porque estudiando algunas especializaciones y diplomados, me he encontrado con estrategias de enseñanza muy novedosas y que me han maravillado.

Mandalas according to Saint Google mean "circles" and are synonymous with harmony, union and visual balance (I repeat, I found it on the internet). Honestly, I had seen its finish but without paying the slightest attention because "it wasn't for me".

Mándalas educativos Los mándalas según San Google significan "círculos" y son sinónimo de armonía, unión y equilibrio visual (repito, lo encontré en internet). Honestamente, yo había visto su acabado pero sin prestar la mas mínima atención porque "eso no era para mí".

It's that if I've never been linked to colours, art, design, imagination, how would I make a mandala? It doesn't sound logical, let's be clear. However, when it's time, you have to take action because we won't lose the material because of a fear that I didn't know if it was going to turn out well or not.

Es que si jamás he estado ligada a los colores, el arte, diseño, imaginación ¿Cómo haría un mándala? No suena lógico estemos claros. Sin embargo, cuando toca, pues uno debe ponerse en acción porque no perderemos la materia por un miedo que no sabía si iba a salir bien o no.

If there is one thing I have learned over the years creating content, it is to change my attitude in the face of adversity or difficulties, so instead of remaining in the "I can't", this was the best opportunity to learn how to do the activity entrusted to me.

Si algo he aprendido en estos años creando contenido, es el cambio de actitud ante las adversidades o dificultades, entonces en vez de quedarme en el "no puedo", esta era la mejor oportunidad de aprender a hacer la actividad encomendada.

To put it in context, I was doing a diploma course on "Human Rights and Gender Equity" and the subject was taught by the lawyer Betsy Leal Zapata from the Human Rights School of the Ombudsman's Office. There, she taught us the unit called sex and the evaluation was to place the topic in a mandala. How would you exemplify that topic in a mandala?

Para colocarlos en contexto, yo estaba haciendo un diplomado sobre "Derecho Humanos y Equidad de Género" y la materia fue impartida por la abogada Betsy Leal Zapata de la Escuela de Derechos Humanos de la Defensoría del Pueblo. Allí, ella nos impartió la unidad llamada sexo y la evaluación era colocar el tema en un mándala ¿Cómo ejemplificaría ese tema en un mándala?

Bueno, en la investigación pude constatar lo siguiente: 🌸 El mándala es una creación libre. En mi caso yo lo imprimí porque si no es mi fuerte dibujar, no me iba a arriesgar en la primera tarea de tal magnitud; yo me fui por lo seguro. 🌸 El mándala te elige. Yo no creía mucho en esto hasta que tuve la conexión con mi propio diseño. Fui buscando por más de una hora distintos mándalas, ejemplos, videos y este fue amor a primera vista; es que cuando fui viendo con ninguno tuve ese hilo invisible, el llamado le digo yo, porque los anteriores no cubría lo que quería plasmar de toda la información que tenía disponible para estructurar. Este cumplió con todas mis expectativas. 🌸 También constaté que tiene una similitud con el mapa mental en varios puntos: el primero es que cada sub tema o clasificación va en un color determinado que no se repite; solo se colocan palabras o frases (nada de definiciones); también aprendí que va en sentido de las agujas del reloj; otro punto es que van ideas principales así como ideas secundarias y por último que todas estan conectadas entre sí, no separadas y hablando de una sola idea central. 🌸 Cómo ya estoy familiarizada con la estructura de los mapas mentales, esto fue "pan comido" es decir, ya sabía cómo lo quería hacer. Y esto me hizo sentirme mas atraída a la idea, por lo que todo fluyó tan natural que parecía que lo hubiese hecho anteriormente. 🌸 Otro tips que me sirvió, fue que previamente hice mi esquema de ideas primarias e ideas secundarias entonces, basándome en ese esquema pude conseguir un diseño que tuviese todos los cuadritos necesarios para colocar toma mi información. De igual modo, esto me permitió escoger los colores para cada subtema, asi que ya con todo listo ¡Manos a la obra!

Well, in my research I was able to find out the following: 🌸 The Mandala is a free creation. In my case I printed it because if drawing is not my forte, I was not going to risk my first task of such magnitude; I went for the sure thing. 🌸 The mandala chooses you. I didn't really believe in this until I had the connection with my own design. I was looking for more than an hour for different mandalas, examples, videos and this one was love at first sight; it is that when I was looking with none of them I had that invisible thread, the call I say, because the previous ones did not cover what I wanted to capture from all the information that I had available to structure. This one met all my expectations. 🌸 I also found that it has a similarity with the mind map in several points: the first is that each sub-topic or classification goes in a certain colour that is not repeated; only words or phrases are placed (no definitions); I also learned that it goes clockwise; another point is that there are main ideas as well as secondary ideas and finally that they are all connected to each other, not separated and talking about a single central idea. 🌸 As I am already familiar with the structure of mind maps, this was a "piece of cake", i.e. I already knew how I wanted to do it. And this made me feel more attracted to the idea, so everything flowed so naturally that it felt like I had done it before. 🌸 Another tip that helped me was that I had previously made my outline of primary ideas and secondary ideas so, based on that outline, I was able to come up with a design that had all the squares I needed to place my information. Likewise, this allowed me to choose the colours for each sub-theme, so with everything ready, let's get to work!

I started by writing the letters in the centre of the word SEX and then continued with each leaf: Sex, Sexual Orientation, Sexuality, Sexual Health, Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights. Each space that I called "petals" I placed its letters, and only one in the "green zone" was the one that I put double but even that I feel that it looked nice because I wanted it that way. Finally, I started by colouring the edges with marker to give it more accentuation and separation between one colour and another and then I filled in each one: purple, green, brown, yellow, blue and the centre in red.

Inicié escribiendo las letras en el centro de la palabra SEXO y luego continué con cada hoja: Sexo, Orientación sexual, Sexualidad, Salud sexual, Derecho a la salud sexual y reproductiva. Cada espacio que llamé "pétalos" le coloqué sus letras, y solo una en la "zona verde" fue la que puse doble pero hasta eso siento que me quedó bonito porque así lo quería. Por último, comencé coloreando los bordes con marcador para darle mayor acentuación y separación entre un color y otro y luego rellené cada uno: morado, verde, marrón, amarillo, azul y el centro en rojo.

Finally, I thought it was very nice to put a sentence they gave in the module that goes like this:

# "The state has an obligation to respect, protect and fulfil sexual and reproductive health." >

Por último, me pareció muy bonito colocar una frase que dieron en el módulo y que dice así: "El Estado tiene la obligación de respetar, proteger y cumplir con la salud sexual y reproductiva."

Look, I just hadn't seen my grade until I was making this post. The evaluation grade was 30% equivalent to 6 points. My grade was 28% and in number it would be 6 points as well. What did I miss or what did I fail to make it perfect? I have no idea because unfortunately there was no feedback, they just posted the marks and that's it.

Evaluación Miren, justamente no había visto mi nota hasta el momento de hacer esta publicación. La nota de la evaluación era de un 30% equivalente a 6 puntos. mi nota fue 28% y en número sería 6 puntos también ¿Qué me faltó o en que fallé para que fuera perfecto? Les cuento que ni idea porque lamentablemente no hubo una retroalimentación, solamente colocaron las notas y ya.

For my part I feel satisfied because if I made a mistake it was not even noticed and for my first time, I did well and counting the growth I had, I felt great!

Por mi parte me siento satisfecha porque si tuve un error ni se notó y para ser mi primera vez, lo hice bien y contando el crecimiento que tuve me senti ¡Genial!

As an educator, I have to make sure that the information arrives and is fixed in the brain of my students, so I really liked this strategy to be able to apply it in the classroom. I imagine it with something previously printed or studied because improvisation does not get the results you want; I do not lose hope of having that opportunity.

Palabras finales Como educadora, debo estar pendiente que la información llegue y se fijé en el cerebro de mis estudiantes, así que esta estrategia me gusto muchísimo para poder aplicar en el aula de clases. Lo imagino con algo previamente impreso o estudiado porque de la improvisación no se obtienen los resultados que se quieren; no pierdo la esperanza de tener esa oportunidad.
