entry shadows 170 titled: shadows in the night

it's not often i take my camera on walks in the dark but when i do i am mostly on the lookout for shadows which can't be seen in the sunlight. for starters, have a look at nearly the same shot night vs, day

of course daytime shadows move with the sun and this one here was completely disjointed at the time i took the shot. stationary night lights create stationary shadows, night after night. i don't think one is better than the other- it's just nice to put them side by side and compare
now let's see what else this april night offers.

i indirectly headed for the winter boat storage yard just beside the docks. along the way there were some interesting shots.

what i like about this one is how at first the rectangular fence seems to form a triangular shadow then i notice how thin the fence board shadows on the pavement are compared to the wide shadows on the wall. the end post also gets grossly exaggerated from a tree shadow which happens to run parallel to the post shadow. and the round pipe below the wooden wall adds another dimension

there used to be a bank in this building and this nook was where the atm was. now the banks are trying to force a cashless system on us so first they closed the branch office and a few years later they removed the atm. anyway the area is well lit from two sides. the left lamp casts a broader shadow than the right lamp so it gives 3 distinct shades, the darkest being where there is an overlap

a similar effect is produced with this stool in the entrance of a covid-closed bar.
i was thinking of using that viking helmet for the guess the shadow contest but i didn't get the angle quite right.

these closely pruned trees which are all over town give weird shaped shadows any time of day

but at night they feed the imagination with even more eerie notions.

i arrived safely at the well lit boatyard. the construction project next to it has a tall crane with powerful lamps on each end of the beam as well as one in the middle.

that gives the winterized boats on jackstands 2 or 3 partially overlapping shadows. of course each overlap makes the shadow darker

the different angles of the lamps give a boat similar yet distinctly different shaped shadows.

here's a nice detail of the propeller

this photo above is the contest entry.

the shadow of this fishing boat bears an unmistakable resemblance to a fish and if you think about it you will realize it is not a coincidence at all
