entry reflection hunters 5 titled winter gulls at dock

these first photos are taken on january 26,2021. now the ice has melted and we have had many days with snow. so i am glad i had the chance to take them during the few days we had good conditions. the first set is from when the tide was high enough for the sideboards of the dock reach below the water level. i have edited the color saturation and contrast on some photos.

the gulls gather when the prawns trawler is at dock as they know the fishermen will cast damaged prawns to them

this next gull is not close to the dock so it is standing in the reflection of a window in the yellow building where the prawns are delivered

the trawler must break the ice to get to dock, leaving a path of open water behind it. the middle section of this next click is that open water. as there is no wind the water is so smooth that it is not obvious whether it is the sideboards themselves or a reflection of them but the chunks of ice in the water is the giveaway.

here the juvenile gull is standing close to the bow of the red boat with the black waterline

these next photos are from january 29th. the tide is lower so we can see under the dock. the water closest to the dock is smooth so the reflections of the icicles are clear. there is more wind here which stirs up the water away from the dock, blurring the image but on the ice the reflection is again clearer

the grayer ice at the very bottom of these last two is original ice which has not been broken. the gulls are standing on newly formed ice which had been broken up by a previous trawler upon leaving the dock. this older ice is obviously thicker so it gives a more muted reflection. so the seemingly simple objects are reflected on a variety of surfaces, smooth and rough water and new and old ice
