Before the electric current arrived in all the houses, when it got dark, people lit the rooms with candles or lamps in which a flame was fed by oil, petroleum or gas. To read and write it was necessary to turn on the lamps placed on the desks. The materials used to build the lamps were fragile like porcelain, transparent like glass and heavy like cast iron.

Prima che la corrente elettrica arrivasse in tutte le case, quando faceva buio, la gente illuminava le camere con candele o con lumi in cui una fiammella veniva alimentata dal petrolio, dall'olio o dal gas. Per leggere e scrivere era necessario accendere i lumi collocati sulle scrivanie. I materiali utilizzati per costruire i lumi erano fragili come la porcellana, trasparenti come il vetro e pesanti come la ghisa.
