The Art of manifests itself in the squares of the city of Maracay

Sand and clay replica of the Cathedral of Maracay

Greetings dear friends of the community Architecture+Design, I am pleased to share with you all this small scale sculpture made by an artisan sculptor to the Cathedral of my hometown Maracay - Venezuela.

Maracay is a city with great cultural and artistic manifestations. Artists take to the streets, avenues and spaces to fill them with their magic, colour and brightness.

A few months ago a sculptor and artist from Maracay made a small scale replica of the Cathedral of Maracay, this replica is made with sand and mud, it is a small sculpture of the Cathedral that was made just in front of the main façade of the Cathedral of the City of Maracay.

5 days ago I was running some errands in the vicinity of the Plaza Girardot in Maracay, this square is located just in front of the Cathedral of the Plaza, when I was passing in front of the square I noticed that there was still that small replica of sand and mud that had made this incognito artist. This sand and mud sculpture is a tribute to the Cathedral and to the city of Maracay according to the caretakers of the cathedral.

I was delighted to return to have appreciated this beautiful piece that draws a little the great diversity of our city and the idiosyncrasy of the citizens that inhabit it, the city Garden of Venezuela is a city with enough artistic movement, obviously by the strong situation that has caused the pandemic and the voracious crisis by the one that at the moment crosses the Country many artists, cultors and craftsmen have had to migrate to other cities or even they have gone away out of the country. Before the economic crisis, Maracay was a very cultural and lively city in terms of events and artistic manifestations, dance, theatre, ballet, extreme sports, adventure sports and tourist activities were the main attributes that characterised the social life of the greenest city in Venezuela.

Maracay hides many attributes, it is a small city but with a great history, in its lands and perimeters great decisions have been taken that have marked the history and the sad present of our country.

The Cathedral of sand and mud

This small sculpture of the Cathedral of Maracay shows a little of the essence of the architecture and urbanism of our beloved city of green gardens, Maracay is a city that still keeps among its streets a little of that architecture of yesteryear, architecture introduced by the Spanish colonisers.

To tell the truth, this architecture has been uprooted from our essence due to the strong political and social changes that our nation has undergone, the colonial architecture is lost among oblivion and neglect, few spaces are properly protected and cared for.
