La ciudad de Algeciras en la provincia de Cádiz, fue un bonito pueblo pesquero entre el mar y la montaña, donde debajo de los cimientos de cada casa y edificio hay ruinas de las ciudades de antaño. Fenicias, romanas y árabes descansan bajo la ciudad actual. La cercanía con el continente africano y la puerta de entrada del Mediterráneo le ha dado una importancia estratégica que ha hecho que esta ciudad crezca de manera exponencial desde mediados del siglo XX por el comercio marítimo.
The city of Algeciras in the province of Cadiz, was once a beautiful fishing village between the sea and the mountains, where under the foundations of every house and building there are ruins of the cities of yesteryear. Phoenician, Roman and Moorish ruins lie beneath the present town. The proximity to the African continent and the gateway to the Mediterranean has given it a strategic importance that has caused this city to grow exponentially since the mid-20th century due to maritime trade.
En los años sesenta y setenta se construyó una muralla de edificios frente al gran puerto destrozando el diseño urbano andaluz, quedando olvidada para cualquier viajero que desee ver algo de la historia de la ciudad o al menos la del barrio pesquero.
In the sixties and seventies, a wall of buildings was built in front of the large port, destroying the Andalusian urban design, leaving it forgotten by any traveller who wishes to see some of the history of the city or at least that of the fishing quarter.
A esto hay que sumarle que una de las arterias de más tráfico de la ciudad está justo delante de los edificios. Por el que hasta hace poco pasaba todos los vehículos que buscaban cruzar el Estrecho de Gibraltar para ir a África. Por ello era necesario introducir zonas verdes que absorbieran algo del CO2 de los tubos de escape.
Junto al puerto habían jardineras con palmeras canarias (Phoenix canariensis) y arbustos de adelfa, pero la llegada del picudo rojo eliminó la mayoría de las palmeras. Por ello se eligió reverdecer la mediana de la avenida buscando embellecer la zona del puerto y filtrar el aire.
Added to this is the fact that one of the busiest arteries in the city is right in front of the buildings. Until recently, all the vehicles that were trying to cross the Strait of Gibraltar to go to Africa used to pass through it. It was therefore necessary to introduce green areas to absorb some of the CO2 from the exhaust pipes.
Next to the port there were planters with Canary Island palm trees (Phoenix canariensis) and oleander bushes, but the arrival of the red palm weevil eliminated most of the palm trees. It was therefore decided to green the median of the avenue in order to beautify the port area and filter the air.
Hasta entonces la mediana que divide los dos sentidos del tráfico en la avenida era un simple bordillo hecho de hormigón con alguna jardinera cada cincuenta metros. En ellas habían plantadas drácenas que eran regadas de vez en cuando.
Until then, the median that divides the two directions of traffic on the avenue was a simple concrete kerb with a planter every fifty metres. These were planted with dracaenas that were watered from time to time.
Lo que se ha hecho es ensanchar la mediana y aportarle volumen creando varias alturas. Se creó un circuito hidráulico para riego por goteo y se buscó mezclar arbustos y plantas rastreras con árboles que hagan de pantalla por su altura.
What has been done is to widen the median and give it volume by creating various heights. A hydraulic circuit was created for drip irrigation and a mixture of shrubs and creeping plants with trees that act as a screen due to their height.
Hiedras, cenizos, violetas, salvias, lavanda y margaritas son la base y el color tanto de sus flores como de sus hojas que muchas son variegadas. La altura la dan grupos de palmeras trachycarpus, ficus benjamina, coníferas y alcornoques.
Ivy, ash, violets, salvias, lavender and daisies are the base and the colour of both their flowers and their leaves, many of which are variegated. The height is provided by groups of trachycarpus palms, ficus benjamina, conifers and cork oaks.
Este pequeño y alargado parque botánico requiere de mucho mantenimiento. El constante crecimiento del vergel puede ocupar los carriles para el tráfico creando un riesgo. Por ello cada semana el personal de jardines de la ciudad cortan un carril para poder mantener los más de dos kilómetros que tiene esta mediana.
This small, elongated botanical park requires a lot of maintenance. The constant growth of the orchard can take up traffic lanes and create a hazard. Therefore, every week the city garden staff cut one lane to maintain the more than two kilometres of the median.
Este gasto y problemas que causa al tráfico son necesarios por no haber tenido un plan de urbanismo pensando en el medio ambiente en épocas anteriores. Para ayudar a paliar esta falta de zonas verdes, la autoridad portuaria ha decidido de ceder parte de sus instalaciones para crear zonas de recreo con árboles y jardines.
This expense and the problems it causes for traffic are necessary because of the lack of an environmentally conscious urban plan in the past. To help alleviate this lack of green areas, the port authority has decided to cede part of its facilities to create recreational areas with trees and gardens.
