Dear readers of this platform, Venezuela has become, since the last quarter of the last century, a point of reference regarding the teaching and mass dissemination of classical music. Indeed, a Trujillo-born economist and pianist, who lived in Barquisimeto for many years, set out since 1975 to create a music teaching system that would be available to a majority of young people and children throughout the country. This is how what is known today as the "System of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Venezuela" emerged. The acceptance by children and adolescents of this idea was the reason why they began to build buildings for the "System" in the main cities of the country. Today we will take care of the Caracas headquarters, which I had the privilege of visiting with the help of a graduate of the School of Arts of my Faculty at the Central University of Venezuela.

In the middle of the “Amador Bendayan” boulevard, with Los Caobos Park as a backyard, the headquarters of the “National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Venezuela” was built, known and called by all as “La Sede”, whose official name is the “National Action Center Social for Music” (Cnaspm), It is worth remembering that it was the teacher José Antonio Abreu Anselmi who founded in 1975 the "Social Action for Music" which years later became the "National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Venezuela" Currently the "System" has almost 350,000 young people throughout the country. The building, which we are dealing with today, was planned to integrate the academic action of the orchestra with other artistic disciplines, as well as to promote the dissemination of the national and universal artistic musical heritage.

This building was inaugurated in 2009, in an area of 14,750 m2, has 10 floors and its design was carried out by the Venezuelan architect Tomás Lugo, with the help, regarding structural calculations, of the engineer Marco Pitrelliño. This work was financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the National Housing Institute (Inavi). Its construction was put out to public competition and 55 projects were presented, the winner being the architects Khristian Ceballos, Alejandro Mendez, Mawari Núñez, Daniel Otero, Jean-Marc Río and collaborators.

This work, in addition to having a structural beauty, has an acoustic and artistic value without equal. It can be said that it is a mix between avant-garde architecture and knowledge of music. The diversity of techniques used in its assembly make it a unique building in the country, as well as the "System" that it houses.

Materials were chosen very carefully for its construction. In the acoustic aspect, insulating products were used, such as rubber flooring and fiberglass in almost the entire structure, in its ten floors (seven upwards from the ground floor and three from basements). All the floors, with the exception of the areas dedicated to administration, have a system that prevents vibrations and ensures that the noise from the rooms does not contaminate the outdoor areas, nor does the noise produced outside contaminate the areas interiors. A low speed air conditioning system was installed to prevent the transmission of vibrations from one place to another.

In total, the work consists of two towers, one facing north, with ten floors, where the Academy works, with its body of classrooms and rehearsal rooms, offices and parking. The other tower, which faces south, houses the great Simón Bolívar room with four boxes; the German Fedora room, the amphitheater, and the Acoustic shell open to Los Caobos Park. ”La Sede” has individual rehearsal rooms, for duo or trio, for rehearsals with piano, wood instruments, woodwinds and strings.

Once inside the building, we find the “Simón Bolívar Room”, designed by the architect Tomás Lugo, capable of hosting an orchestra of 300 musicians, which has been a space for the presentation of great masters such as Claudio Abaddo, Krzysztof Penderecki, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Simon Rattle and Diego Matheuz. In addition, this room has a stage made up of three independent mobile platforms that can be controlled electronically. Even the floor of the platform is made of Arkansas pine heart, a wood that has the property of recovering its original state in the face of small attacks caused by the cello and double bass pikes. In this room there is an instrumental jewel made by the German company Orgelbau Klais specially designed for a concert hall, it is a tubular organ 11 meters high and 13 meters long, considered unique in Latin America.

The building consists of more than 100 spaces for teaching and musical performance, it has instrumental and choral rehearsal rooms, concert halls, theater, chamber music room and an acoustic, mechanical shell, mentioned above, in the open air, requested expressly by maestro Abreu, in which concerts are sometimes offered. On the other hand, the "Headquarters" was equipped with workshops for the manufacture of musical instruments, recording booths, dressing rooms, cafeterias and administrative and health services; To complete its functionality, it has a theatrical mechanical system, professional lighting, sound, video and networks with national and international connections.

Although it was to be expected that acoustics were a fundamental element in the construction of "La Sede", the sensation you feel when you walk through the facilities is incredible, from the very entrance you find the mosaic floors designed by Cruz Diez which are a chromatic torrent in green, ocher, blue and black, where the black represents the keys of the same color of a piano: For its part, the ceiling is a giant figure, donated by the great Venezuelan artist Jesús Soto, which is a yellow and white aerial sphere, it is called "Great virtual yellow" completed in 2006. It can be said that kinestism has been breathed since the very beginning of a visit to the building. Carlos Cruz-Diez also donated the design of the tapestry that covers the seats in the Simón Bolívar room and the amphitheater, which are called “Chromatic Induction”. Its conception was based on the programming of five colors and ten permutations, starting from the combination of them.

I hope you have enjoyed this magnificent architectural and artistic gem of the "System", which is the pride of all Venezuelans. I would like, to finish, thank the young man who guided me in the visit to the facilities of the Building, for his professionalism as well as his knowledge of the "System" and its headquarters.
