When my oldest daughter was two years old, we came up with the idea of buying her a box containing 1000 pieces of Lego, to which we added small boxes of trolleys, kitchen, dolls, etc. In truth, the one who most enjoyed building various objects were her parents, since she was hardly beginning to pay attention to this type of game. These Lego pieces later became the property of my grandchildren, with whom, despite the unfair competition from electronic games, we continued to put together pieces that represented figurative places, objects and people.

In 2017, my elder daughter, her husband, their two children and I visited the Legoland theme park in Florida, specifically in Winter Haven, USA. This park, like its counterparts in the world, is divided into thematic areas, some of which are common to the rest of the other parks located in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the US. In 2017, what is so far the last Lego park was inaugurated in Dubai. The largest of all, with sixty hectares, is expected to open this year in New York City.

Our first impression was to be in a privileged place from where we could see buildings, animals and iconic places from around the world, such as the Parthenon in Athens, the Statue of Liberty, The Eiffel Tower, London Bridge, the Port of Copenhagen. , part of the cities of New York, London, San Francisco, among others, as well as the surprising face of Albert Einstein, all built from millions of Lego pieces.

I declare my admiration for the different things we saw in Legoland, it is incredible how they have been able to build images and buildings so complex that they leave us perplexed when we contemplate them.

I have a nephew who has been a Lego lover since he was a child, who enjoyed assembling classic figures or those invented by him using the famous Lego bricks or pieces. Currently, he is a mechanical engineer and resides in Europe, but he is still a Lego fanatic to such a degree that the last gift he sent to his father is a replica of a Volkswagen car, known in Venezuela as the beetle, of which you will be able to see photos in a post dedicated to it.

Researching the history of Lego, I have learned that the first Legoland park is Legoland Billund, located in Denmark and opened in 1968, near the park is the first Lego factory. In Billund, a small village of no more than 6,200 inhabitants, in 1932, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a local carpenter, began by making miniature wooden furniture that, over time, turned them into modular toys, but made of plastic. These toys are known as Lego, a word that in Danish means “play well”. This factory has always been owned by the Kirk Kristiansen family and has become one of the largest toy brands in the world, with a presence in more than 130 countries. Its quality and durability is highly recognized throughout the world, as only 18 out of every million pieces do not pass quality control. The factory can, in Billund alone, produce 2.5 million Lego pieces per hour.

Nine Legolandias parks are currently operating, with Dubai being the last to open its doors to the public. However, the only one we have visited so far is the one in Florida, located near the Orlando airport, it is the largest of all the Legolands, with almost sixty hectares of extension, it was inaugurated at the end of 2011, this park has between forty to fifty attractions, some of which we have photographed and enjoyed on our short visit.

Like everything that wants to preserve, develop and grow, the Lego group has made important changes to stay thriving in the competitive market of toys; In that sense, it was a great idea to ally with the US MIT to manufacture motors, touch sensors, photoelectric sensors, gears, shafts, which, together with the well-known blocks, created the possibility of children making their own robots with the syncretism resulting from the classic blocks and the new nanotechnologies.
