If Galileo inspired Newton in his research, we must not forget that the crystal ball was his main source of inspiration.
We can see in this painting that the globe is entirely blue and glowing, which is a subtle way of referring to the occult sciences without really representing them, which would have been unacceptable at the time.
This is my own interpretation, Wikipedia is innocent in this case.
