Reasons Why It's Difficult To Trust

Trust is a delicate and complex issue in relationships, and there are several reasons why it may be difficult to trust people, and this reason differs from person to person.

Past experiences: At different stages in our lives, people have taken advantage of the trust we had for them, either by betrayal, deceit, or being let down by the people we love the most. This can make it hard for people to open up their hearts to trust again because it might involve letting their guard down and possibly exposing them to hurts and pains.

High expectations: Having high or unrealistic expectations can also lead to distrust. When people have high expectations for others, it can be challenging for them to trust because they establish an impossible bar that others would find difficult to reach.

Fear of people taking advantage of your vulnerability: Trusting someone means being vulnerable to them and allowing them to get to know us better. And this can be a bit scary because it might require letting down your guard and giving it your all.

Having different values and priorities: Most trust usually depends on people having the same values and priorities as us, so when we meet people who don't see or believe in the things we do, it becomes difficult to trust them.

The fear of being manipulated: The heart of man is desperately wicked; many people have been manipulated by the people they trust the most, so they try to guide their hearts not to fall victims to being controlled or exploited for personal gain.

Lack of self-trust: Sometimes the reason people don't trust others is because they don't trust themselves. For people who have low self-esteem or who judge things, it is difficult to trust others.

Lack of communication: when communication is lacking, a lot of unfounded and baseless assumptions hold sway. This has been proven to be the root cause of many avoidable hurts that led to distrust. Many times, rather than ask questions or seek clarification, we assume, and more often than not, our assumptions end up being wrong.

Misguidance: We live in an age where you get to know people by referral, and this is largely based on what you are told about them. Sometimes, you may never really get to know people on a personal level, but you may need to rely on what people tell you about them. This alone can be a major determinant in business partnerships, relationships, etc. Misguidance is very dicey in that if negative information is passed and a wrong impression is created, then that contract is starting off on the wrong footing. There won't be trust in that relationship, and in that kind of situation, nothing can thrive.
