My Vacation Experience To The South

This past summer I had the amazing opportunity to visit the south to explore some of the country's top attractions. As someone originally from the northern region of Ghana, it was eye-opening to travel south and experience the diversity of my own nation. Over the course of two weeks, I visited Accra, Cape Coast, and many places in between. It was an unforgettable adventure that gave me a deeper appreciation for Ghana's rich history and vibrant culture. ![](

My journey began in the capital city of Accra. I started by visiting the National Museum, which provided an overview of Ghana's artistic, archaeological, and historical heritage. I was able to see traditional Ashanti golden jewelry, ceremonial drums, clay pots, and other artifacts. Next I headed to the National Theatre, which hosts drama, dance, and musical productions. The building itself was impressive, with its soaring granite architecture. No trip to Accra is complete without a visit to Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial. Walking around these monuments I felt a strong sense of Ghanaian pride. I also spent time relaxing at Accra Beach, dodging soccer games and enjoying the ocean breeze.

After a few days in Accra, I headed west to Cape Coast. This city was once the capital of the Gold Coast during colonial rule. My first stop was Cape Coast Castle, where slaves were held before being loaded onto ships and sent to the Americas. Taking a tour of the dungeons and walking through the infamous "Door of No Return" was a powerful and sobering experience. Nearby, I hiked through Kakum National Park and walked along the canopy walkway suspended high above the forest floor. Back in town, I visited the Cape Coast Center for National Culture to learn about the Fante people. The traditional dancing and drumming performances were exciting to watch. I also spent an afternoon wandering through the historic district, taking in colorful colonial architecture and ocean views.

This vacation provided eye-opening insight into Ghana's complex history and diverse culture. By exploring cities like Accra and Cape Coast, I gained a stronger sense of national identity. I returned home with wonderful memories and a desire to discover more of my own country. This trip revealed Ghana's incredible wealth of attractions beyond what I knew growing up in the northern region. I'm so grateful I had this opportunity to expand my horizons and experience the spirit of Ghana.
