Flash Of My Late Grandma’s Presence

My mother’s biological mother died when she was 18 years so she was raised by her mother’s sister or let’s just say her aunt. One thing about my mother’s family is that they all resemble each other. Sometimes at family events, I even end up mistaking my aunties for my mom when I’m far from them or when their backs are facing me. So I never even knew the maternal grandma I was going to all this while wasn’t my biological maternal grandmother until that day when I opened the old picture album.

One of my favorite things to do everytime I come home is to rearrange everything at home, especially if that particular arrangement has been there for so long. It was just like any other vacation. I was in Senior high school then. I went home and of course “madam rearranger” was back in action. I wanted to move the sofas to different places and then make sure the whole place is rearranged to my taste, after all I was only going to be at home for a couple of weeks.

I started by sweeping and mopping. I was done with everything in some hours, that was the longest cleaning I ever did because the sofas were too heavy for me to rearrange them but I did anyway. That’s how come it took me a while. I finished cleaning everywhere leaving one particular area, my mother’s desk. My mom hates for her desk to be cleaned by any other person apart from her so I don’t even bother. Anytime I clean her desk that’s when her receipts and exams papers get missing.

I walked to towards the desk and saw the family album. Anytime I see albums I rush to open them because they easily bring back so many memories. I looked at all the pictures, laughed at some old pictures and when I was about to put it back, a picture fell. It looked old and different from all the pictures. I picked up looked at it for some minutes and the person in the picture looked just like my mother but way older. Before I could even realize, the curtains started flying as if they were trying to come off from the curtain holder.

The air in the living turned so cold and suddenly it felt like I was at the beach. I was stuck for about 5 seconds. Unable to move. Even though I was young, I had seen something similar happen at my uncle’s funeral which was interpreted to be his presence so I just knew my grandma was there. I’m sure you’re expecting me to be scared and all but no! I was kind of happy that she was around. I don’t think I would have even been scared if she appeared physically.

I told my mom about the experience and she sat me down trying to explain everything but I made her know she really didn’t have to because I knew everything.
