Relatively hot Thursday afternoon. Radovljica, a town in northwestern Slovenia.
It's time for a traditional event, Radol'ška 10ka. Usually this event is run on the streets. Yet, this year because of some road work and for practical reasons it was moved to the track of the local stadium.
Not many runners showed up. I guess they were scared of the heat.
There were three groups of runners to tackle 25 laps around the track. The first group consisted of the two youngest men's age groups. The second heat was the most crowded, with middle age groups, men again. I guess we are the craziest.
In the last group, women and masters were running together. When they started, at 7:30 pm the track was already in the shade and the air pleasantly warm.
On the cover photo, the overall winner, Marjan Robič in 36:09.7.
The younger men's age group's heat was the least crowded.
The winner in the women's competition, Nives Skube in 42:36.2.
The fastest master, Bojan Galin in 42:46.5.
The results with the last heat still on track.
My personal goals were:
- A: finish the race in sub 50 time
- B: finish the race with a smile
- C: finish the race
Since I don't do any speedwork this was practically a long tempo training session.
We started at 6:30 pm, still under the hot sun. I tried to keep my own pace and don't bother about other runners. At first, I was running slightly faster than expected. After 4 kilometers I paid the price of the fast start and slowed down noticeably. From this point to the end I was trying to keep the constant pace and push it a bit quicker in the last laps.
The result: 49:30 minutes. Goal A reached.
I was happy when I crossed the finish line for the 25th time. To be honest, I could probably run a bit faster. Yet, it was a good result.
Before the run. You've seen this photo already.
Kilometer times. The first two kilometers were the quickest. Regarding the lap times, the 25th was the quickest. Then I put all in and sprinted the lap to reach the finish line in time.
The map tells you the story of making rounds.
I didn't switch on the track mode on my Coros Pace watch. With this mode, the watch locks in on the exact distance of the lap. I'll try it on one fine day in a training session.
The official results are already available here. In a day or so the organizers will publish the photos: I hope I'll see some action photos of my crawling around the track.
To sum it up, it was hot and it was fun. It was a different experience and a welcome transition from trails to flat courses.
