Post-rock is a genre that is born from experimentation and to a certain extent from the rejection of at least conventional vocal structures. On a previous occasion I did an article about one of the most important bands of this genre but I think it is better to explain what this is all about.
The atmosphere is the most important thing in a post-rock band since it is a genre that does not usually include vocals except as Sigur-ros and yet they do not do it in the conventional way but using gibberish. Post-rock uses this atmosphere with guitars that use specialized distortions to create a spatial atmosphere that audibly transports us to other worlds.
El post-rock es un género que nace de la experimentación y en cierta medida del rechazo de estructuras vocales al menos convencionales. En una ocasión anterior hice un artículo sobre una de las bandas más importantes de dicho genero pero creo que es mejor explicar de qué va todo esto.
La atmosfera es lo más importante en una banda de post-rock ya que es un género que no suele incluir vocales a excepciones como Sigur-ros y sin embargo no lo hacen de la manera convencional sino usando galimatías. El post-rock usa esta atmosfera con guitarras que usan distorsiones especializadas para crear una atmosfera espacial que nos transporta auditivamente a otros mundos.
Speaking of academic music, musicians of the stature of Olafur Arnalds have been influenced by this genre and the genre in turn with minimalist musicians such as Max Richter or Philip Glass. Post-rock has a minimalist but dense structure, saturated with an intense climax and a progressive use of in crescendo to achieve it, hence the name Explosions in the Sky, since these explosions are usually accompanied by riffs with beautiful melodies.
I consider post-rock a genre beyond the experimental, it is a genre that evokes nature, the universe itself and comes with a lot of influence from space rock. Bands like Exxaxense, from Spain, show us that influence, having videos with a space theme and cosmonauts included.
Despite being a genre with explosions, it serves a lot to relax and feel different emotions in the course of a song. As there is generally an absence of voice, guitars do this job and believe me that many of these melodies can produce extreme auditory sensations.
Hablando de música académica, músicos de la talla de Olafur Arnalds se han visto influenciados por este género y el género a su vez con músicos minimalistas como Max Richter o Philip Glass. El post-rock cuenta con una estructura minimalista pero densa, saturada de un clímax intenso y un progresivo uso del in crescendo para lograrlo, de ahí el nombre de Explosions in the Sky, ya que estas explosiones suelen venir acompañadas de riffs con hermosas melodías.
Considero al post-rock un género más allá de lo experimental es un género que evoca la naturaleza, el universo en sí mismo y viene con mucha influencia del space rock. Bandas como Exxaxense, provenientes de España nos demuestran esa influencia, teniendo videos con temática espacial y cosmonautas incluidos.
Pese a ser un género con explosiones sirve mucho para relajarnos y sentir emociones diversas en el recorrido de una canción. Como en términos generales hay una ausencia de voz, las guitarras cumplen con este trabajo y créanme que muchas de estas melodías pueden producir sensaciones auditivas extremas.
Although it is true that most genres have certain parameters to be able to identify them except for genres such as avant-garde, in this there is a lot of experimentation. True, we can easily identify when a band is post-rock but also a band would not have to do with the other just by being labeled under the same concept. There is a huge difference between bands like Sigur-Ros or Russian Circles (band with a heavier and post-metal concept).
The drums often have jazz influences, they are fast with diverse rhythms and an exquisite set of cymbals. Other times they are dense and with downtempo as in Sigur-Ros. The genre tends to incorporate sounds of progressive rock, electronic and jazz without any dissimulation, making it a diverse and very original genre that will probably catch your attention if you like atmospheric genres.
Si bien es cierto que la mayoría de géneros tienen ciertos parámetros para poder identificarlos a excepciones de géneros como el avant-garde, en este hay mucha experimentación. Cierto, podemos fácilmente identificar cuando una banda es post-rock pero también una banda no tendría que ver con la otra solo por ser etiquetadas bajo el mismo concepto. Hay una diferencia abismal entre bandas como Sigur-Ros o Russian Circles (banda con un concepto más pesado y post-metal).
Las baterías muchas veces tienen influencias de jazz, son rápidas con ritmos diversos y un juego de platillos exquisito. Otras veces son densas y con downtempo como en Sigur-Ros. El género suele incorporar sonidos de rock progresivo, electrónica y jazz sin disimulo alguno, convirtiéndolo en un género diverso y muy original que probablemente captara tu atención si te gustan los géneros atmosféricos.
In general terms it is a genre oriented towards nature and space, tremendously sonorous that will give us a new experience at the auditory level. It is enough to close your eyes and let yourself be carried away by the music, by the melodies and the prolonged ambient spaces. As a good experimental genre, many times we can appreciate electronic parts and a good example is 65 days of Static, which achieved that cross between electronics and post-rock very well.
Even the genre has been seen in return in the most extreme scene with black metal bands resorting to these sounds to create a dense atmosphere but in these cases dark and depressing.
Post-rock will bring us peace and with its atmosphere it can serve as catharsis and therapy for many as it has worked for me. A daily post-rock session can make the day much more relaxed but also charge us with the energy and positive vibes necessary to start a better day.
A genre that I would like to share with you by leaving some of the best bands I know: God is an Astronaut, Explosions in the Sky, Goodspeed You! Black Emperor, Pelican, Red Sparowes, Mono, 65 days of Static, and Mogwai. I hope you like the genre and give you the peace you need on any day.
En términos generales es un género orientado hacia la naturaleza y el espacio, tremendamente sonoro que nos brindara una experiencia nueva a nivel auditiva. Basta con cerrar los ojos y dejarse llevar por la música, por las melodías y los espacios ambientales prolongados. Como buen genero experimental muchas veces podremos apreciar partes electrónicas y un buen ejemplo es 65 days of Static que logro muy bien ese cruce entre electrónica y post-rock.
Incluso el género se ha visto en vuelto en la escena más extrema con bandas de black metal acudiendo a estos sonidos para crear una atmosfera densa pero en estos casos oscuros y depresivos.
El post-rock nos brindara paz y con su atmosfera puede servir de catarsis y de terapia para muchos como lo ha funcionado para mí. Una sesión de post-rock diario puede hacernos el día mucho más relajado pero también cargarnos de la energía y vibra positiva necesaria para empezar un mejor día.
