Coworkers and Self Control

That's it!

Pardon my french but "Je suis pas mal tanné". As a developer, I was trained in finding solutions to hard problems. Everything that seemed impossible at first, I almost always found a solution with time and effort. I'll say it wasn't always the best solution, but I tried to make the best I could with the information I had in hand at that given time. Is it so hard to find people like that?

Fail and Learn

Learning has never been a challenge for me because it's something I like to do naturally. But failing is also part of the process, and without fail, you don't learn as quickly. Failure is never fun, nobody wants to take the wrong decision. Especially big ones where something important is at stake. Enter my colleague. Let's call him "D". D is very self-conscious. D likes to manage and delegate to others. D is someone that might be good at giving orders and doing very high-level management where he can hide behind the skills of other people in meetings. D is a pain.

Stuck with him

Rewind a couple of months back when 2 of our most talented analysts quit. One for maternity leave and the other to earn more money. Due to bad circumstances, we had to replace them quickly and my boss chose "D". He looked professional, acted professionally. What could go wrong? So much. That guy constantly asks basic questions even after 9 months of training. In the past month, we hired another specialist that already knows more than him.

Incompetence. It's everywhere.

And it's not the first case of incompetence I had to face in the last 10 years I work at this place. Why is it so hard to find people equally motivated and quick learning? Short and long term memory loss is another issue I've had with many colleagues where they would totally forget anything they've worked on in the past... Hour? Come on, if you know your memory sucks, take notes! Having to manage people I feel like I'm dealing with kids that never had to take any responsibilities. Whatever the age range, I've had the same kind of behavior with people anywhere between 20 and 50.

Alright, now take a deep breath, everything will be ok.
