What I Have Missed the Most During Quarantine | Sway on Stage | Hosting Events

True Confections is a television show that I was so obsessed with as a kid. It's a show where they teach how to make different kinds of desserts. I remember as a kid, I'd pretend to be of one the hosts and act as if I'm on camera telling people how to make a chocolate moist cake or a strawberry cheesecake. At first I thought that was the reason why I love that show: I love desserts, hence I took up Hotel and Restaurant Management in college, but looking at it right now, I was in love with how they share the process. I now realized it was the hosting part that made me obsessed with the show.

When I was still in High school, I wasn't really that confident when it comes to speaking in front of many people. I'd get made fun of because of how often I stutter, but that didn't stop me from doing what I'm passionate about. Whenever we would have classroom functions I'd always volunteer to be the Host, since I was a freshman student. I really enjoy talking in front and make people laugh, despite the criticism I got, I still devoted most of my time into mastering my craft. My first huge hosting event was during our Senior Ball, which was something I wasn't prepared for. I just came there to enjoy and little did I know I was up for a surprise. Turns out, the host that they have, which was also a student at that time, had cold feet and wouldn't do it unless if she had a partner, and because most of my classmates have seen me Host multiple events in our classroom, they all told our adviser to have me paired with her. I was genuinely shocked because I've never handled that many audience before, there were probably almost 500 students in the ball room.

I was so nervous but I told myself, expertise comes from experience, and this would be a very great opportunity to show what I have. It was truly a memorable experience for me, did I get to dance with the rest of the students during the farewell part? No, but I was truly happy being on stage and seeing how beautiful it is to see people smile and knowing that you had your part in making it, and that's when I knew, that hosting was for me.

Fast forward to sophomore year in college, where I had the grand opportunity to host the biggest party in my university. I told our Department President if he could pitch my name in during their council meeting and because of that, I had my first grand event. There were thousands of students during that time since it was the closing activity for Intramurals. When I walked on stage, along with two of my co-hosts, I just felt the energy of everyone there. I haven't transitioned yet so I still had short "boy" hair and I could just hear people from the crowd saying "he sound so feminine" and I took that as a compliment. After the event, a handful of students came up to me saying how good the show was and that they were amazed with how I did. It was really such a gratifying feeling and it made my passion for hosting grew more.

When I was elected as the President for the Student Body Organization of our department, and as well as the Vice Chairman for the council that runs the entire University, I got to really hone my skills in hosting. Every time we would have an event, they would always have me as the Host, and since we constantly have one, over time, I became familiar to many students.

Having the connections that I have also made way for me to freelance outside the University, wherein I get to host other social functions.
I got to host debuts, birthday parties, beauty pageants, corporate functions and many more. I am proud to say that through freelancing while I was still a student, it helped me pay school fees. I'd say I was living the Hannah Montana life back in college, student by day and an entertainer by night. Also, since I haven't transitioned yet in college, I had to wear wigs on my events, so I was living two personas lol.

I truly enjoy being on stage, it's like I'm in my element. The reason why I love hosting the most is because I feel like I'm living that childhood dream of telling people how to make desserts, but on stage. I just talk my heart out and I get paid for it, like, who wouldn't want that? I could stand for hours even with high heels on because for me, hosting never feels like work, and every time I host, I feel like I'm a celebrity.

I have learned a lot since then, and I truly can't wait for the pandemic to end so I could express my love for hosting even more. The amount of serotonin I get whenever I get to hold the mic on stage is really something else, and that's truly one of my biggest dreams. To be able to have a regular schedule and use my love for hosting as a means of supporting myself. When the world heals from all of this, I hope I get to show more of what I can offer, and help create smiles that would enlighten the world so much more. ✨
