Haciendo un recuento de los inventos que una vez fueron útiles para la cotidianidad de la humanidad, a continuación les traigo la segunda parte de “Recuerdos de un pasado no tan lejano”, en la cual expongo los objetos y herramientas que forman parte de mi hogar y han sido legados por mi familia, los que a su vez guardan una historia importante, que creo digna de ser recordada. He aquí otra pequeña compilación de estos recuerdos.
Making an account of the inventions that were once useful for the daily lives of humanity, below I bring you the second part of "Memories of a not so distant past", in which I expose the objects and tools that are part of my home and they have been bequeathed by my family, who in turn keep an important history, which I think is worth remembering. Here is another small compilation of these memories.
Estoy casi segura que muchos de ustedes no tienen idea qué es esto que les presento. Yo tampoco lo sabía cuando lo vi por primera vez. Esto que están viendo es un telar de tejer alpargatas. La alpagarta es el calzado preferido por los llaneros, y son tejidos en nylon o pabilo, con una suela de cuero curtido. Se utiliza tanto para las faenas del campo como para andar en el pueblo. Este telar que les presento perteneció a mi bisabuela, y es una reliquia única que atesoro. Aún en el país existen artesanos que se dedican a este oficio, pero son pocos.
I am almost sure that many of you have no idea what this is that I present to you. I didn't know that when I first saw it either. This you are looking at is a loom for weaving espadrilles. The espadrille is the footwear preferred by the llaneros, and they are woven in nylon or wick, with a tanned leather sole. It is used both for the tasks of the field and to walk in the town. This loom that I present to you belonged to my great-grandmother, and it is a unique relic that I treasure. Even in the country there are artisans who dedicate themselves to this trade, but they are few.

Otros objetos, pero más antiguos, que se empleaba en la primera parte del siglo XX son las planchas que funcionaban gracias a algún combustible como la gasolina, la bencina, el kerosene o el gasoil. La que coloco en la fotografía funcionaba con gasolina y perteneció a mi familia. Eran muy eficientes para alisar tejidos fuertes, pero el calor generado era bastante intenso por lo que planchar con ellas era difícil, especialmente en un clima tan cálido como el del llano venezolano, además de existir un alto riesgo de accidentes por explosiones.
Other objects, but older, was used in the first part of the 20th century, are the irons that worked thanks to some fuel such as gasoline, benzine, kerosene or diesel. The one I put in the photograph worked on gasoline and belonged to my family. They were very efficient at smoothing strong fabrics, but the heat generated was quite intense, so ironing with them was difficult, especially in a climate as warm as that of the Venezuelan plain, in addition to the high risk of explosion accidents.

La invención de los lavamanos es algo relativamente nuevo. Anteriormente se empleaba lo que se conoce como aguamanil, que era básicamente una estructura de madera con espejo incorporado, en donde se colocaba una ponchera de peltre, en la cual se depositaba el agua para asearse. En la casa de mi familia existieron estos muebles hasta que fueron sustituidos por los lavamanos. Aquí les muestro una ponchera de peltre que no tiene uso y que perteneció a mi Tía Chichita.
The invention of handwash is a relatively new thing. Previously, what was known as an ewer was used, which was basically a wooden structure with a built-in mirror, where a pewter punch bowl was placed, where the water was deposited for cleaning. In my family's house these pieces of furniture existed until they were replaced by the sinks. Here I show you a pewter punch bowl that has no use and that belonged to my Aunt Chichita.

Por último, está un invento que es casi que prehistórico y es la piedra de moler. En prácticamente todas las culturas del mundo se ha empleado esta herramienta, ya sea para moler grano, ablandar carnes, desmenuzar todo tipo de alimentos. Tengo una piedra de moler que pasó de generación en generación, y que existen desde que construyeron mi casa hace más de cien años. Actualmente no la empleo para fines culinarios, sino que está como un recordatorio de tiempos pasados, de cómo fue la vida antes.
Finally, there is an invention that is almost prehistoric and is the grinding stone. This tool has been used in practically every culture in the world, whether it is to grind grain, tenderize meats, and crumble all kinds of food. I have one that has been passed down from generation to generation, and has been around since my house was built over a hundred years ago. Currently I do not use it for culinary purposes, but it is a reminder of past times, of what life was like before.
