It was only late afternoon when Sarah had a chance to sit down. John would be back in a few hours, but she was overwhelmed and totally exhausted. She hated it here.

All she dreamed about was to be back in the city. All those dreams were shattered into pieces when the war started.

John made such an impression on her father. She knew he loved her, and she floated on air when he finally asked her to marry him. The first year of marriage was a bliss. John promised her the stars and the moon, and she believed him with her whole heart.

John had his own business and she was able to host wonderful parties on weekends and mix with the most elite residents in the city.

They went to Paris to buy all her ballgowns, and she felt like she was floating on air.

When the war began, life became hard and when they invaded their beautiful house, they had to move. She had to leave most of her beautiful gowns in the house. They had no other choice but to leave. They lost everything.

They took the bare necessities and moved to the farm that belonged to John’s father. She begged her parents to come with, but they couldn’t, and it was the saddest day of her life when they had to say goodbye.

She had such a lot to learn on the farm. It kept her very busy, but it didn’t take away the longing for her friends and parents. It’s been months since they have had any news from any of them, and she had no idea whether they were still alive or not.

She was in constant panic, and John was so busy trying to build the farm back to its original glory that he didn’t have time to spend with her. They hardly spoke, and it was just at night during supper when they had a little time to chat. She felt rejected and very alone.

When the news came that the war was over Sarah was overwhelmed with joy, but she was equally disappointed when John said that they were not going back. He didn’t want to be back in the city. He enjoyed the simple life and he wasn’t willing to give it up. He never noticed the disappointment.

She begged him to take her back to the city, and after a few months, he finally gave in. There was nothing left when they got there, and their house was broken down. It would have taken years to rebuild everything.

She had no other choice but to go back to the farm with him.

She heard the horse’s gallop and she knew John would be there in a minute. She wiped the tears away with her silk handkerchief and set the table. When John opened the door, she smiled and walked over to kiss him. She could see that he was totally exhausted and had a very long day.

John could see the tears in her eyes and held her in his arms a bit longer than usual, and then went to wash up for supper.
