From Bogota to Cali and lodging.

Hello friends, as I mentioned in the previous post, from Bogota we had to go to Cali which is another Colombian city because it was difficult to get a job or source of income in the capital of that country and we were already without much money (a month without a job) and spending what we took with us from Venezuela.

In the previous post I wrote that my partner had some friends who lived in the city of Cali, in an apartment with two bedrooms, living - dining room, kitchen with a place to wash and hang clothes and a bathroom, there lived my partner's friend who I will identify only with the letter "K" his brother who I will call him with the letters "Ke" and his partner who will carry the letter "D". Well, I tell you "K" was very attentive to my partner and that we went to Cali because the situation in Bogota was very difficult, which was true and so we decided to go. Once we arrived in Cali at the terminal we started badly, because K told my partner that she would pick us up at the terminal and she never arrived, after being approximately 30 minutes ⏰ at the terminal she gave us the directions on how to get to the apartment by cab, so well we tried to spend the day quietly. At first she offered us her room because it was very hot there and to give us more privacy, which we accepted although it had nothing or bed or anything, so she accompanied us to buy a mattress at least to have a place to sleep (note that as we did not have much money, we bought a rag mattress type mat but stuffed with rag) and well now we could rest in a "safe" place.

Because we arrived in the middle of Holy Week we stayed to share with them and a friend of theirs who visited them from time to time, we ate fish (river fish that does not taste anything I must say) but at least a decent meal, after that weekend we spent the next week looking for a job with D since she was out of work too, we walked a lot, both looking for work and also to know the place. One day we entered a cyber and there was a paper stuck on the door that said that a sportswear factory was looking for staff to work from home and face to face, so the 3 of us went to the place to ask and offer ourselves as employees. To which they chose my partner and D, I was told to go to the days, however I had an interview at a foundation to work as an Occupational Therapist and that interested me much more, so I did not go to the factory when they indicated it, my partner and D stayed working.

I went to the interview at the foundation and they told me that I would start the next day, which in principle was an achievement. I started working there and I didn't last two weeks because the pay was very little, the work environment was quite hostile and besides I had to buy things to work out of my pocket, as well as make photocopies of the medical records and send the therapy reports by mail (I had to pay the cyber for it) so as it was more expense than income I decided not to go anymore.

As I made that decision, I had to move to get some job because my partner was working but for being a factory he was paid little, that's why I went again to walk a lot to look for a job somewhere, talking to K tells me that an acquaintance of hers was working in a bakery and they were "hiring" staff, so we went to leave cv's and see if we could get something, the guy at the bakery took care of us and said he had an opening for only one (as K worked weekends at a grill restaurant he gave the opportunity to me) so the next day I was at 6:30am at the bakery: 30am at the bakery.

Because it was an informal job, I was there almost 1 month, but talking with my partner and seeing that we were about to expire the 90 days stay that they give you to be as tourists and depending on the Colombian government to obtain a special permit to stay we had to do something very crazy 😱, leave Colombia before the initial 90 days expired and re-enter as a tourist for the next 90 days more. That was a super rough experience since my partner asked for permission at the factory to be absent and on my side the bakery could no longer pay all the people I had, so it was no big deal.

We bought the bus ticket and traveled about 18 hours to the border of Colombia 🇨🇴 with Ecuador 🇪🇨 to stamp exit the country, enter Ecuador, spend the day and the next day do the same in the opposite direction, what we did not count on was the large number of people who wanted to leave Colombia, That is why after enduring so many hours of travel we arrived in Ipiales (border) and made a big line to stamp passport out of Colombia, after many hours we did it and walked to Tulcan (Ecuador) to make another big line of people to stamp passport and enter Ecuador, after many hours we did it.

We went from the border to the town of Tulcan Ecuador to spend the evening (it was very cold) so we bought a baked chicken to eat, anecdote: they gave us spoons of cutlery to eat the chicken 🤦. But well, we went to the hostel where we rented the room and rested that night since the next day would be just as rough or a little more.

The next day we got up early and went to the border which was full but not as full as the day before, we stamped the passport to leave Ecuador around noon and went to the Colombian side to stamp, the thing is that the line was much longer than the day before and there was a lot of delay on the part of migrations Colombia, we were scared that they would not let us enter and we had to wait all day, So much that it became night and we were unable to seal, until finally at 10pm we managed to do it without major problem, only that we missed the bus that would take us back to Cali so we had to spend the night in a hotel near the terminal, the next day we went very early to the terminal and managed to get on a bus at about 8am due to the amount of hours we arrived at night to Cali but with the tranquility of being 90 days more legal in the country.

Once we arrived in Cali, we had the first problem with K because she said that we were not collaborating with the payment of the services in the apartment and the thing is that my partner charged and with that we went to the border, but as we knew that we had to pay our part of the services, we avoided spending as much as we could, so the next day the first thing we did was to leave the payment of what corresponded to us but already there the problems began.

I talked to my partner so that he could talk to the factory and see if there was an opportunity for me to work there as well, since I could not get a more stable job. So at first I went in as my partner's assistant at his job and then I went to stamp tokens to assemble the soccer balls.

There were many good and not so good things there but we managed to save money to continue to our destination and we also made good interpersonal relationships with the people there. I must say that the experience in the ball and sportswear factory was quite good.
However the problems in the house of the "friends" was getting worse and worse, Ke told some friends that they could stay at his house that he would receive them, so we were no longer 4 people in the apartment but 6, the mess they left in the kitchen, the dirty bathroom and their uncooperative behavior made the coexistence more and more difficult, K is a quite problematic girl so she had problems with her sister-in-law De, with me and my partner, with her brother and with anyone who gave a different opinion from hers in different aspects, that is why we talked to the owner of the building to see if she had another studio apartment to rent or even a room to rent us and thus "live" a little quieter ....

The lady rented us a room in an apartment that was in the same building but on the first floor which was in the process of restoration, it was really a filthy place, it had no floor (it was dirt with pieces of ceramic), it had no kitchen or dishwasher, only the dishwasher drum without faucet or pipes, the water fell into a bucket and from there we had to pour it down the drain or toilet, were the worst housing conditions but we were so desperate about the situation in the other apartment that we decided to move in those conditions.

However there we spent days, months, my partner's birthday, my birthday, Christmas and any other event, in that time while we were living there they did quite a lot of reforms at least so we could live half quiet because the owner was very very annoying but at least we no longer had the problems with the "friends". When we managed to save some money we finally decided to go to our destination; Argentina 🇦. Which I will tell you about in another post.
