What's up everyone. I've been so busy these days I barely had time to follow to the letter the Inktober schedule, so I decided to skip the 17th day and continue from here – even though I'm very late this time, haha. Among the other themes, this one in particular sparked my interest in writing a brief review and my opinion regarding the Korean drama Hotel del Luna (호텔 델루나) – one of my favorites by the way – which relates to the Moon theme.

He estado tan ocupada estos días que ni siquiera tuve tiempo de seguir al pie de la letra el cronograma de Inktober, entonces decidí saltar el día 17 y continuar desde aquí – aunque llegué muy tarde esta vez, jaja. Entre los otros temas, este en particular despertó mi interés en escribir una breve reseña y mi opinión sobre el drama coreano Hotel del Luna (호텔 델 루나) – uno de mis favoritos por cierto – que tiene que ver con el tema Luna .
This series was released in 2019, it has romance, comedy, drama, fantasy, deals with the supernatural and even mentions some periods of Korean History. It's captivating until the end – you'll cry as much as you'll laugh, it has the right dosage of everything.
Well, let me shortly talk about this drama: Hotel del Luna isn't a regular hotel – it's a place where the souls, as soon as they die, look for shelter so they can get rid of their unsolved life griefs before departing to the afterlife. Jang Man-weol (장 만월) is the owner of the hotel – she's been running it for about 1,000 years due to an incident in the past, which made her feel guilty for those who died because of her – and also made her held deep grudges against her enemies.
In order to take responsibility for her mistakes, she takes the souls of her deceased comrades through their belongings and wanders around towards the Guesthouse of the Moon, the only place where they'd finally have the rest they need. As a punishment, she had her soul tied to the Moon Tree, which made her stop aging until she'd clear up her pending issues with the human world.
Esta serie estrenó en 2019, tiene romance, comedia, drama, fantasía, habla de sobrenatural e incluso menciona algunos períodos de la historia coreana. Es cautivador hasta el final – vas a llorar tanto como vas a reír, tiene la dosis correcta de todo.
Bien, voy a hablar brevemente sobre este drama: Hotel del Luna no es un hotel cualquiera – es un lugar donde las almas, después de morir, buscan refugio para deshacerse de sus dolores no solucionados de vida antes de partir al más allá. Jang Man-weol (장 만월) es la dueña del hotel – lo ha estado administrando durante aproximadamente 1,000 años debido a un incidente en el pasado, que la hizo sentir culpable por aquellos que murieron por ella – y también la hizo guardar profundos rencores contra sus enemigos.
Para asumir la responsabilidad de sus errores, ella lleva las almas de sus fallecidos camaradas a través de sus pertenencias y deambula hacia la Casa de la Luna, el único lugar donde finalmente tendrían el descanso que necesitaban. Como castigo, ella tuvo su alma atada al Árbol de la Luna, lo que la hizo dejar de envejecer hasta que aclarara sus problemas pendientes con el mundo humano.
Some weeks ago I drew one of the most badass scenes of Man-Weol. It's a scene from her past – I promise I won't give spoilers – right before when she went looking for the Guesthouse. Man-Weol lived during the Three Kingdoms period, she was a Goguryeo descendant – and from a village of thiefs that were also political objectors. In the picture scene, she's wearing a hanbok (한복), a traditional Korean clothing. This one specifically is a noble costume, exclusively used in special cerimonies.
Hace unas semanas que dibujé una de las escenas más badass de Man-Weol. Es una escena de su pasado – prometo que no daré spoilers – poco antes de que fuera a buscar la Casa de la Luna. Man-Weol vivió durante el período de los Tres Reinos, ella era descendiente de Goguryeo – y de una aldea de ladrones que también eran objetores políticos. En la escena de la imagen, ella esta usando un hanbok (한복), una ropa tradicional coreana. Este específicamente es un traje noble, utilizado exclusivamente en ceremonias especiales.
Process
Okay so, here we have a watercolor realistic portrait of the goddess IU (이 지은) who played the role of Man-Weol. I still couldn't overcome how amazing and how powerful she is in this scene ❤️. I chose her to represent the moon because of the multiple symbolisms regarding her character. In addition to what I said above, the hanja (chinese characters) for Man-Weol means "full moon".
For this drawing I used Faber Castell watercolor set on a A4 300 g/m² watercolor textured sheet. I particularly prefer painting on soft textured surfaces even if I'm using water on water technique or dry one – I feel I have better control over the paint puddles.
Dale, aquí tenemos un retrato realista en acuarela de la diosa IU (이 지은) que interpretó el papel de Man-Weol. Todavía no pude superar lo increíble y lo poderosa que ella está en esta escena ❤️. La elegí para representar a la luna por los múltiples simbolismos sobre su personaje. Además de lo que dije anteriormente, el hanja (caracteres chinos) de Man-Weol significa "luna llena".
Para este dibujo utilicé el set de acuarela Faber Castell en una hoja texturada A4 de acuarela 300 g / m². En particular, prefiero pintar sobre superficies de textura suave aunque si estoy usando la técnica de agua sobre agua o la seca – siento que tengo un mejor control sobre los charcos de tinta.
I played a bit with complementary and analogous colors – actually it's the first time I'm using colors instead of grey in shadows – this is curiously a beautiful technique I really wanna improve to use hereafter, the experience was pleasantly good.
Jugué un poco con colores complementarios y análogos – en realidad es la primera vez que uso colores en lugar de gris en las sombras – curiosamente, esta es una técnica hermosa que realmente quiero mejorar para usar de ahora en adelante, la experiencia fue agradablemente buena.

If you like fantasy, you should definitely take a look at Hotel del Luna. What made fall in love with this series is the subtle way death is portrayed along the story – it's generally represented as a dense and complex theme to talk about. The direction the drama takes couldn't be different – it's objective, straight to the point, with no far-fetched plot twists, or forced attempts to have a "happy ending". Not to mention that the cast was very well chosen and the original soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard in this drama world.
Hotel del Luna also makes us reflect on our lives somehow, we constantly catch ourselves tied up to useless negative thoughts that only lead us to self destruction and hurting people around us. In conclusion, it's subtle, smooth meanwhile is deep and reflective.
Si te gusta fantasía, definitivamente deberías ver a Hotel del Luna. Lo que hizo enamorarme de esta serie es la forma sutil en que se expone la muerte a lo largo de la historia – generalmente es representado como un tema denso y complejo de hablar. La dirección que toma el drama no puede ser diferente: es objetivo, directo al grano, sin plot twists inverosímiles, o intentos forzados de tener un "final feliz". Sin mencionar que el elenco fue muy bien elegido y la banda sonora original es una de las mejores que he escuchado en este mundo de los dramas.
Hotel del Luna también nos hace reflexionar sobre nuestras vidas de alguna manera, constantemente nos atrapamos atados a pensamientos negativos inútiles que solo nos llevan a la autodestrucción y a lastimar a las personas que nos rodean. En conclusión, es sutil, suave mientras que es profundo y reflexivo.
