Good evening everyone, today I share with you my pen drawing of the very famous Filipino artist named Whang-od Oggay, who was born in 1917(104 years old). She is often described as the "last" and oldest mambabatok (traditional tattoo artist of the Kalinga tribe).
The Kalinga were known as headhunters, their tattoos representing bravery.
The tattoo ink she uses is composed of indigenous materials, usually a mixture of charcoal and water that is struck into the skin with a thorn from a calamansi or grapefruit. This ancient batok technique dates back a thousand years and is relatively painful compared to conventional techniques. It uses designs found in nature and basic geometric shapes. She has numerous signature tattoos, but as of 2017, her signature tattoo consists of three dots, representing her and her two apprentices, depicted as a continuation of the art form from the generation before to the next
