This was an amazing thing that happened inside my own home.

Hello everybody! It is the first time that I publish The Pollen Flow in this interesting community and I have brought something surprising that I observed two days ago within my internal garden, and it is THE FORMATION OF A HONEY BEE HIVE, specifically of the species Tetragonisca angustula Illiger, also known as aricas or angelitas. I have previously published about these beautiful native American bees, which are eusocial, very useful for ecosystems, produce a very high quality honey and also lack a stinger, so they are very tame.

Now, the Tuesday around 4:00 pm, I was struck by the fact that in the corner of a door of a small warehouse that I have inside my house, specifically in the internal courtyard, (my house has an old architecture, with a patio internal and solar, lacks a front garden), I saw a whirlwind of arica bees. It would be about 100 little bees spinning in a whirlpool in the upper right corner of the door, so I went over to watch.

My surprise was great, because I realized that they were beginning to create a hive. I had seen this behavior before, near the trillolit vine (Combretum indicum), which I have in my inner garden, but I had not understood it. I saw then that they had already built a small entrance approximately one centimeter in length. I hope I have not interrupted this process.

It is important to indicate that they are very selective with their diet, they usually only feed small flowers, such as those of lemon (Citrus sp.), those of currants or yellow cherries (Phyllantus acidus), and those of trillolit (Combretum indicum), perhaps that is why they are nesting near this last plant, since they have it only a meter and a half from the future hive, which I really hope is formed and that it has not interrupted this delicate process.

Yesterday Wednesday, I went to check if the hive was still in formation and I saw that the entrance is fully built. Inside was a little bee that looked at me suspiciously, so I guess it's forming. I have not seen any guardian bees flying over the entrance area, but I suppose this will happen when the hive is bigger. What did attract my attention is that the entrance to the hive is perfectly camouflaged with its surroundings, since the color it has (caoba brown) is very similar to that of the painting on the door frame in which it is located, While if I compare it with the oldest hive on my backyard, the entrance has a different color, which is also camouflaged with the color of the concrete block that contains it. They can make the comparison between the photos of the two hives.

As I indicated in my previous post, I want to reproduce these bees on my site, I am currently building houses to make a meliponary, but I do not have enough water supply, which prevents me from planting more flowers to feed them; however it is necessary to say that these small insects are the cornerstone of all ecosystems, without them the existence of life on Earth would not be possible. Here I end my post for today, I hope it was pleasant for all of you. A big hug.
