Ulog #7: Ampalaya con Carne

Is anyone here who eats bitter gourd or bitter melon? In the Philippines it is known as "Ampalaya" in Filipino language.

Many of us especially children do not like to eat this kind of vegetable-fruit because of its bitter taste. But somehow, there are good benefits that we need to know about bitter gourd and some of those benefits are as follows:

  • Helps in maintaining blood sugar levels and lowers bad cholesterol.

  • Makes glowing skin and lustrous hair and also good for our eyes.

  • Cures hangovers and cleanses the liver.

  • Helps in weight loss and boosts our immune system.

And now to help you enjoy eating bitter gourd as one of your dishes that you can cook and serve with the family, I'm going to share an easy and simple way of cooking. This recipe is called "Amplaya con Carne".

Ingredients:

1/2 kilo sirloin beef, strips sliced
2 large onion, chopped
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1 big size bitter gourd, sliced
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
4 gloves of garlic
Salt to taste
Sesoning (optional)
Cooking oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. First, marinate the beef with soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, crushed garlic and black pepper. You can add some salt depends on your taste. Set aside for about an hour.

  2. After marinating, in a cooking pan put enough oil for frying. Put the marinated beef to fry while stirring continuously until tender.

  3. When the beef is already cooked, remove it from the pan and set aside.

  4. Next, saute onion in the same pan for about a minute, add the sliced bitter gourd and stir fry until half cooked.

  5. Lastly, add the stir fried beef in the same pan and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes. Add some seasoning to taste and it's done.
