The SEASON FINALE RENTAL POWER FIASCO! An Examination of Foolishness

Is it a bug or is it a feature?

It's the final day of the current Splinterlands season and that means we have a lot of people talking about something I've come to call the Season Finale Rental Power Fiasco? What is this incredibly named fiasco? Well, renters can cancel the cards they have out on rent early and that has some serious negative effects on the renters who are trying to rent just enough power to be able to earn more prizes. How often is this happening? Well, it's really hard to tell.

Right now four out of the last 5 top post on the Splinterlands Reddit mention this effect. Does this mean that this rental issue is effecting a majority of players? I really cant say! If it's effecting you I'd love for you to leave a comment here! One of the things we know about the scholars over at Reddit is that they absolutely love to complain and the crypto-spaces in the platform have always been especially toxic.

I don't want my bias against Reddit to cloud this issue though! If there is a largescale exploit in Splinterlands it's often communities like this that will discover and popularize it first so, if only as 'canary in the coal mine', it's worth paying attention!

It's takes two to tango here and if players are getting their rentals cancelled early and losing enough power to get less rewards that means there are likely a large number of renters out there cancelling their rentals to cause this. As someone who considers themselves a Splinterlands expert and is currently renting out tens of thousands of dollars in Splinterlands assets: That is really really stupid.

I've been playing Splinterlands for coming up on nine months now and something that you quickly notice is that the card rental market ebbs and flows with the season. In the beginning of any season it's nearly impossible to get any bites on rental cards at any price. By the end of the season you'll quickly find you can rent nearly any good card you want within hours for very good profit. When the season ends the rental market falls off a cliff. All this is normal.

Right now I'm renting out the majority of my collection as I overplayed yesterday and need to let me DEC Capture Rate catch up today. I reached my League goal for the season (Diamond 3) and I'm much rather go into the next season with 100% DEC Capture than land a single Daily Quest. Especially considering that the first full day of every season sees about half the normal number of games and thus is SUPER PROFITABLE for those of us who play! Oops, is that one of those Splinterlands pro secrets we're not supposed to talk about? Well, I'm spilling the beans!

Back to Renting: Cancelling your rentals in the final hours of a season is cancelling your absolute best Splinterlands income. What do you get for it? The ability to maybe screw over a stranger who is playing a game you enjoy. Reader, to me, that feels like the actions of a very bitter player. Also, one who is not so good at math.

Friends, we should be supporting each other whenever possible and not lining up for opportunities to screw ourselves (and maybe a stranger) over. If you are one of the players who is getting their rentals cancelled, I'm really sorry to hear that. If you are one of the players cancelling your rentals to troll other players, I hope I've demonstrated why you have a direct financial incentive to stop doing that.

Also, if you are a player who has not yet experimented with the rental market let me be the first to invite you into this amazing part of Splinterlands. Using the in-game tools or the advanced tool-set over on PeakMonsters.com you can rent nearly any cards you are not using to earn extra DEC before Chaos Legion drops later this month! It's a great way to support your account growth, the community as a whole, and learn more about what makes NFT gaming special!
