Silent Night: An Encounter with the Unknown

“What’s happening?!”

Tony stared at the bright white light shining at him from above. Eyes narrowed and left hand on his forehead, Tony tried to peer at the object that was shining its light on him. Unfortunately, the light was too bright for him to see the object that was making it. It’s like he’s staring straight into a car’s headlight in the middle of the night – it’s blinding.

Obviously, the object that was shining its light on him is no car. After all, cars don’t fly.

A helicopter, perhaps?

Tony quickly denies that assumption. A helicopter’s rotor makes a lot of noise but besides Grace, his dog’s barking, there was nothing else making any noise.

Could it be a drone?

No, it couldn’t be a drone as well. Drones make noise too though they aren’t as loud as helicopters but the thing that was shining its light on him was completely silent.

Just what is it? What the hell is he looking at? Also, why does he have the feeling of being observed?

Tony could feel his agitation increasing, and heart beating faster… no, his heart has been beating faster since a while ago. And who could blame him? Anyone in his situation would surely feel the same.

Before this strange encounter, Tony was alone at home with Grace, the family dog. His wife and two kids are out and would be staying at his in-laws house for the weekend. Tony on the other hand was forced to stay due to work much to his regret.

Although feeling regretful that he couldn’t spend the weekends with his family, Tony still tried to make do with his situation. His original plan was to simply enjoy his alone time at home. But upon seeing how beautiful and clear the night sky was, he quickly changed his mind.

In his youth, Tony was an amateur astronomer, and loves to look at celestial bodies using a telescope especially during clear and cloudless nights. But after he started working and becoming a family man, Tony rarely had the chance to indulge in his hobby. That being said, whenever he got the chance, he would blow the dust off his telescope and would go look at the stars, sometimes with the kids.

To think that his rare chance to indulge his hobby would turn weird in a heartbeat. Tony is terrified… and regretful. He shouldn’t have come to this hill just so he could have a better look of the celestial bodies.

If only he just stayed home. If he did he would be lazing on the sofa, and drinking beer while watching a game of baseball on television. But nope, he just has to drive for about half an hour to this hill on his jeep just so he could enjoy the beautiful and clear night sky.

“I really messed up,” Tony murmured to himself as fear grips his heart. “I hope “they’re” the friendly type.”

Since drones and helicopters are out of the equation, Tony could only think of one thing that could fly or float without making any noise. It just that he couldn’t see it since its light is blinding him.

Yeah, when he said “they”, he’s referring to those little green men in science-fiction movies and novels.

Of course, there’s still the chance that he’s just overthinking things, and that the mysterious object was just some sort of noiseless, and experimental military aircraft but Tony doubted if that was really the case. No, Tony was convinced that the object that’s shining its light on him is some sort of an alien craft.

After all, why on earth would an experimental military aircraft shine its light on someone like him? He’s just a nobody. Moreover, it’s not like the hill he was on was some sort of secret facility. It’s just the top of a hill road. He had driven the same hill road for years now and there’s nothing strange or mysterious about it.

“God, please make them friendly,” Tony prayed.

Tony has heard and read many stories of people being abducted by aliens over the years. Back then, he simply laughed such stories off and considered people making those claims delusional or mentally unstable. Now though, he’s worried that he might get abducted and experimented upon.

Whether God heard his prayer or not, Tony’s fear was unfounded because after hovering over him for several more seconds (though it seemed like an eternity to Tony), the mysterious object suddenly vanished after flashing a light that almost blinded him.

When Tony’s eyesight recovered, he discovered himself and Grace alone on the hill. No matter how much he looked, the mysterious object was nowhere to be seen. After that he made a visual examination of his and Grace’ body and found nothing wrong with them. Or at least nothing that he could see.

Apparently, they are now safe. The mysterious object (which he believed to be an alien aircraft) left him and Grace alone without doing anything to them.

“Could it be that “they” just want to observe us closely?”

Tony was baffled by the mysterious object’s purpose. From the looks of things, all the object did was to shine its light on them as if examining them.

Crossing his arm, Tony fell into a deep thought for a minute or two but stopped after having no breakthrough.

“I should just go home,” Tony mumbled to himself.

Realizing that he’s getting nowhere trying to make sense of the situation, Tony decided to just let things be. Right now, all he wanted to do is go home and go to bed.

“Should I tell anyone about my encounter? Nah, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I highly doubt anyone would believe me even if I did anyway.”

Having made the decision not to tell anyone of his encounter, Tony started walking towards his jeep. And after letting Grace in, he drove into the distance with the memory of the event still fresh in his mind.
