Welcome to The Ink Well Golden Quill Writer Showcase!

In this series, we are selecting one writer to showcase in each edition. The selected writer may be a rising star or an author whose work consistently demonstrates the writing skills we promote in our writing prompts and our catalog of fiction writing tips.

In all cases, The Ink Well Golden Quill will showcase a community member in good standing in The Ink Well who regularly publishes in our community and supports other community members by reading and commenting on their work.

In addition to showcasing one of the author's recent stories, we will also reward a Golden Quill badge to the writer.

Story Excerpt: The Metaphorical Sinkhole or A spoon of mashed potatoes

Wanda took a seat at the dining room table. Not the informal dining table near the television, but the mahogany table in the good room. The table had been set with her crocheted place mats. Her son, Noah, never felt comfortable with this setting as he perceived they sought to lull him into a sense of ease which was never maintained. He did, however, dart his eyes to the cutlery at each of the place settings, and he was delighted to see a spoon. He knew that his mother always sought to use dessert as a way to break the tension after her announcements, and Noah appreciated any opportunity for custard.

What We Loved

With this story, @lordtimoty puts on full display the drama and tension of a family whose matriarch rules the roost. From a tilt of her head to eyeing her daughter's fingernails, to choosing whether or not to include a spoon at the dinner's place settings, her complete command over the family is clear. And the tension as the dinner commences is palpable. No one wants to be the first to pick up a serving spoon, nor to be the topic of the dinner conversation, as it is clear it will not go well for that individual.

Author Accolades

@lordtimoty writes with sophistication and wit. He often takes the reader's breath away — whether with humor or with delightful (and sometimes searing) insights into the human condition.

Well done, @lordtimoty. Keep writing!
