The office phone rang, but Ann was too busy to answer it. However, after 5 minutes, Miss Howard, her secretary, came in and insisted that I please pick up the phone, that they had called again and it was something urgent. This time Ann did not hesitate and when she answered, her face paled and large drops of sweat began to run down her forehead.

Since Ann joined the company, employee productivity has increased by 70 percent in just two and a half months. That is why Mr. Moore was happy and satisfied to have been offered the position of Human Resources Manager.

Ann was a middle-aged, highly intelligent woman who graduated from a prestigious university in the country. She is a recognized professional with a very good reputation. If she wanted it, she could brag about the plethora of job offers that she always had available to her.

Although money was important, it was not his main driver. She was a woman of challenges. For that reason, when Mr. Moore begged her to give him an interview and listen to her offer, she gave him a chance, despite feeling very comfortable in her current position.

The salary was very attractive, but even more so was the commitment that his job performance required in this new company. 65% of the staff were female and almost 40% had children and although 35% were male, 15% of them were elderly or suffered from some type of chronic disease.

All this cocktail justified a high percentage of monthly absences, due to their own illness or that of a child, for visits to school or medical consultations. As much as they tried to improve the situation for a considerable time, they could not do it. Well, this was the main objective that Mr. Moore was looking for when hiring Ann.

But now, the situation had changed and it was not on her side. A great fear invaded Ann's entire body like a cruel vine that penetrates through her entrails and runs through her entire body from her head to her feet. Her carcass became heavy, which did not allow her to even move.

Her secretary, Miss Howard, kept looking at her with surprise and curiosity. What was happening? Had something bad happened? Ann's success and reputation are supported by the establishment of strict compliance rules, which she herself complied with and ensured that they were complied with.

But she was not a cruel woman, although she was unbending. Ann was a very elegant and pretty looking woman. She also had excellent manners and was an excellent example of following the rules. She was always the first to arrive and the last to leave.

The first work shift started at eight o'clock in the morning. However, it had set a 15-minute slack, after which it was considered a late schedule.

Before going to his workplace for the first time, she reviewed the files of all the workers, interviewed several employees of the human resources department and Mr. Moore himself, who religiously went to the company every day. This allowed her to draw up a very clear strategy and draft the most appropriate rules so that the objectives for which she was hired could be achieved early. She also saw fit to prepare position and procedure manuals for the different positions in the company, which were non-existent until then.

Well, there were several weeks in which Ann worked hard, to be able to elaborate the support of her strategy, until “day one” finally arrived for the countdown of a new objective achieved. The first day was crucial, her employees were expecting what the new Head of Human Resources would be, and more because of the reputation than preceded to her, in fact they already called her "Cruella".

How many of them would be replaced, how many extra hours would they have to work without being paid, how those mothers would do when the nannies could not take care of their children. Plus what would happen when they didn't feel too good or when Mr. Berns got the anxiety attack or when Michael's biweekly migraine hit. There were many doubts and fears about the new Chief.

This time Ann asked that at nine o'clock the staff be gathered in the conference room without exception, that there be refreshments for everyone, coffee, juices, sandwiches and some donuts to finish sweetening the moment. Everything was ready, the table served, the staff assembled and Mr. Moore at the foot of the canyon. She didn't want to see anyone standing up, so she explicitly asked for enough chairs to be available.

Everyone was surprised that Ms. Ann Stuart was a very nice and gracious woman. She explained her work methodology to them, made them aware of the need to make an effort to comply with the rules, which was not a suggestion but an obligation. She also clearly explained all the rules to them and distributed a party favor that consisted of a beautiful emerald green letter-size envelope containing a copy of the rules, position and procedure manuals, a notebook, pencil and a key ring with the identification of the company and a desk identifier with the name of each of them.

She told them that from the next day, there would be a card clock at the entrance in which they had to register their entrances and exits. They were not allowed to go anywhere during working hours, nor could they use their cell phones during office hours. However, the telephone exchange would be available for any personal calls that they necessarily had to make. The internet would be restricted to only necessary sites and nothing else. No one could be unnecessarily away from their place of work or stay in offices that did not correspond to them without any justification.

It was not what she said, but how she said it that made the workers not feel beaten, but rather embarrassed by the failures they had presented. They were happy to learn that in each shift there would be 2 half-hour breaks in which they could leave their jobs and rest or share in a large room that had been prepared for that. There was comfortable furniture, a television, a coffee maker, a vending machine for soft drinks, one for sweets and another for snacks, which will be updated daily.

Certain excused absences were allowed and for others there were deductions from the day's salary. They also couldn't take their son to work. But that day, yes that very day, Ann felt that this world that she had built for so long throughout her career, her castle of rules, was now about to devour her whole.

Ann had tried not only to set the proper rules but to lead by example. Thus, she could encourage others to comply with them and would not become anyone's excuse for violating them. But, as if by magic, she suddenly found herself on the wrong side.

Mrs. Elisa, the babysitter, had called her to tell her that she was on her way to the company to drop off the girl, because her mother had been admitted to the city hospital as an emergency and she couldn't stop going and couldn't take the little girl either.

Ester was only 4 years old and was about to arrive. Now what would she do? She would receive her at the entrance and she would have to leave? But it was not time for her to leave, if she left everyone would see her and for almost a month none of the employees had been absent for any reason. Meanwhile Miss Howard looked at her curiously trying to figure out what was going on.

Ann was restless, and not knowing what to do, she told her secretary what was happening. She (Miss Howard), told her not to worry too much about it and since the girl would come to the office, she should take her to her office and then she would take care of her. But in Ann's world that wasn't possible, how could she make the rules and then break them?

But Miss Howard told her not to be so hard on herself. That everyone will understand her, because she was human and her circumstances did not allow anything else. Although, she also had the option of leaving, but she subtly asked her what was the "most productive":

-Go home with the little girl? Or keep her work schedule with her daughter in the office?

This made Ann understand that we are not infallible and that encouraging a sense of belonging and promoting pleasant work environments, in addition to courteous treatment, can be a greater source of motivation than the obligation to comply with the rules.

So that day, Ester worked with her mom. The rules continued to exist and every two months assemblies were held to refresh them during a meeting in the assembly hall, where the workers who had had the greatest compliance were also rewarded.

But from then on, Ann understood that every rule also has its exception.
