Blinding Lights||The Ink Well Prompt #53

Gwen couldn’t comprehend how she got to the isolated highway and why even after she had hiked a distance, she still appeared back to where she had started.

At that point, she sat down at the side of the road and began questioning what was happening but before she could think any further, she heard a car honk which made her hastily stand up hoping that she could hail the driver, she rushed to the road without caution and the last thing she could remember was seeing a blinding headlight before hearing a loud crash.

“Gwen, Gwen, wake up, you are only dreaming”, She heard a voice say while violently shaking her.

She instantly opened her eyes and met a concerned set of blue eyes that belonged to her boyfriend looking down at her and figured out that she probably had the same dream she had been having for the past years.

Without saying a word, she gently caressed the shoulder of her boyfriend, got up from their soaked bed, and walked into the bathroom to take a shower.

This was her routine most nights after she had that dream and even after months of therapy, it seemed like the only way she could get a good night’s rest was through popping a bunch of sleeping pills which she didn’t appreciate.

She tried to recall what the therapist had said in their last session and couldn’t help but roll her eyes remembering the words that were said to her.

“You probably have some unresolved trauma that your brain wants you to fix and until you do, that dream will keep reoccurring”.

Of course, she would have some unresolved trauma after being raised by a bunch of crazy people but to her, she didn’t think that they mattered enough to cause her to have nightmares.

The therapist had mentioned going back to her parents to fix their relationship but the more she thought of it, the more convinced she was that she would rather have that dream for the rest of her life than ever see them again.

For Gwen, her parents were part of her bad past which she was lucky enough to escape when she met her boyfriend, and after years of seeing them fight, have confrontations and run several scams which she never understood because they were very wealthy and didn't need the change they got, she couldn’t imagine allowing them back into her life.

After getting out of the shower, she hopped into her bed with a strong conviction that the headlights would always be a part of her life and she wasn't going to fight it anymore.
