The ink well prompt. The audit.

Lanre's face dripped with an uncontrollable sweat, his eyes looking at every corner in the boardroom like someone who is looking for an escape route, from the up and down of his chest one could tell his heart beat even faster than one could ever imagine.

Lanre was sure his blood pressure would be high only if there was a thermometer that would have confirmed that.

His mind was elsewhere; he couldn't comprehend anything at that moment as even his response to the board room is not well organized. All he says is always out of point when he tries to make a point.

This clearly could tell that he is about to get himself into a full and terrible situation, the auditors looked at each other as they observed something fishy from Mr. Lanre who happens to be the head of the department and a signatory to every money that comes in and out of the office in the accounting department.

The recent audit says that the total sum of 1 million dollars is approved for the renovation of the office but the statistics taken prove that the resources used for the project are not up to the amount approved for it.

So how can you explain that?

Mr. Lanre was short of words to explain, I.. I… we… Mr Lanre stammer as he tries to explain but he was cut short again by one of the Auditors.

We have gone even a step ahead of you. One of the auditors proceeded, records here showed that the money was approved by you on the 15th of March for the renovation of the office.

Yes sir. Mr Lanre answered.

And the equipment used for the work showed that the work is done at a cost that is just 15% of the total money approved. Can you please explain how you manage this money?

Yes, the money was approved on the date you mentioned but the work was done at the cost which is about 99% percent of the money approved. Mr. Lanre tried to explain.

Then why did you write the cost to be at 100% of the money approved, another auditor asked.

Yes, we tried to cut costs but we couldn't so we realized the money approved is used for the whole work….. This time around Mr Lanre was losing focus and stammering. This could tell he was only trying to make way where there is none.

Within that period, you renovated your house which cost about 150 thousand dollars and from all analysis, your salary for 2 years is not up to that amount and you have just spent a year and three months here so how do you manage to explain that?

Mr. Lanre's eyes looked in shock as to how they came with the exact money he used for the renovation of his house. At this point, he knew more trouble would come if he tried to make his way out. While his thoughts were still roaming his heart.

This does not even talk of the 2022 SUV car you bought, all this within the space of a little time. Another Auditor added.

Wow!!!!! His mouth is widely open, Mr. Lanre said unconsciously.

He was speechless as they walked him out with hardcore around his wrist since he was unable to give a vivid explanation of the money spent.

Mr Lanre, was detained for 2 days as he made contact with his lawyer who will be handling the case but then Mr. Lanre knew he was in a big mess as he knew even his lawyer will not be able to save him at this point the only thing the lawyer will be able to do is to appeal for the judge to temper justice with mercy so that his prison sentence will be reduced with a bail. That can be met.
