His eyes wandered around the room, there was almost no object to focus on, the room he was in was the main room, as the ancients put it; living room. There were no openings or protrusions in the walls because windows and balconies were no longer necessary. The interior was constantly cleaned with ventilation. There wasn't much to see outside anyway. Neither a tree, nor a flower, nor a cat nor a dog… The last bird chirping was heard on earth in April 2839. The animals were no longer alive. Just human. Twelve trillion eight hundred nineteen billion five hundred six million two hundred forty-one thousand six hundred and eighty-four people, but the number would soon decrease by one.

If he went outside, the sky, which had turned from gray to black, was no longer attractive. He didn't want to wander the colorless, rough, tall buildings and wide twenty-lane roads if he didn't need to go to work, but it wasn't something that could be done from home.

His job was actually very simple, a profession that hasn't changed much for centuries, just adding the necessary materials and waiting for it to happen. Actually, he didn't need to control it, the reaction was working flawlessly, but since human life is at stake, control is essential if he doesn't want to lose his job.

There were still those who grew plants far from the city, genetically modified plants; 700 times more productive and satisfying than old crops. The proteins in those plants had to convert their amino acids into essential amino acids because there were no longer any animals for humans to eat. But the human organism needed animal proteins, fats, carbohydrates. Humans had found a way to convert the atoms of amino acids in plants to those found in animals, and all he had to do was add the necessary ingredients and wait. Enzymes would work quickly. In this way, people could eat and continue to live. Of course, if this can be called living...

There was absolute silence everywhere. The rooms were extremely insulating, the cars made no sound while they were running, and there was no living thing outside that could make a sound; other than people. People didn't talk much on the street either, if they're just friends.

In all this silence and nothingness, he was sitting on a very soft sofa-like chair, with only one thing on his mind: what happens when he dies?
