Series Title: Our Thirteen Sonatas

Week 1: A Star Burns Bright as It Collides

The day the rains came my farmhands were truly delighted. We’ve experienced a draught far worse than the ones we had before, this rain was a blessing. It seems Lady Luck has smiled down on me once more.

I watched from my windowsill the fruits of my labor, it has been a long life and I think I have done good with—from a humble farmhand myself, to taking a risk as a businessman, and now my very own hacienda. Ahh.. but I must not let it all go to waste.. For despite having lived a long, prosperous life, I have no heir to leave upon this legacy of mine.

No matter, my people will suffice. They have earned their keep and will now sow the seeds of their labor.

I smile at that thought and slowly make my way to the shaded veranda, sitting on my rocking chair as I enjoy cool breeze and the gentle pitter-patter of the raindrops.

“Señor Vasquez! You will catch a bad cold if you stay out here too long!” Ah, my trusted confidante now appears and I watch as Ms. Blanc frets over me, placing a light blanket over my prone form. “There, that should keep the cold away for a while longer. How about I bring up some tea for you, Señor?”

I briefly nodded at that, softly telling her that lavender tea would be perfect for the occasion. Ms. Blanc only smiled as she nodded enthusiastically before heading inside, I can only imagine the look on her face when she finds out that this manor of mine will soon to be hers. As a soon-to-be mother, and without a father to support her unborn child, I only hope this place will the perfect environment for them. Her dreams of having her own Bed & Breakfast out here in the countryside will soon come true, and I smile to myself as I envision this place to be filled with warmth and laughter.

I feel my eyes droop and take in a deep breath, smelling the earthy scent that always comes when the parched soil has now had its thirst quenched, and start to feel my thoughts drift away..

Life has been good to me this time around, but the ghost of you still remains and I wonder.. Was it Fate’s design for us to not meet in this lifetime?

Perhaps Lady Luck will smile down on our next course in life?
