In 1999: The Inkwell Writing Prompt

Mr Adams, an old man with gray, pushed his glasses a little below his eyes and read the sentence again, aloud this time to draw the attention of the man standing beside him in a black suit. "In 1999, no headlights were on cars but there was never a case of an accident". The man chuckled unbelievably, he looked at the old man and nodded his head smiling broadly.

"Why was it in 1999?What happened after that?" the man asked.

"People became reckless," the old man replied.

"I think there was just a few cars in use then"

The old man smiled, "You're wiser than I think, that's the point exactly, the world is growing rapidly and things are changing".

Shortly after the rain had stopped drizzling and the fog cleared, the man in a suit left his hiding place to drive home. The thought of the old man's words kept recurring. He had lost a friend once through an accident that was as a result of a reckless drunk driver. The driver had flashed his light toward his friend's car making him unable to see the bump ahead of him. Ever since then, driving at night scares him. He looked at his wristwatch, it read 7:30pm, his destination was two hours drive from his location and it would be dark before he got there.

"The fog has cleared and the rain has stopped. Why are you still sitting in your car when others have gone" the old man asked him.

"I just felt like staying out here a little more," he lied.

"A few minutes ago, you've been eager for the rain to stop drizzling and now you want more time?" The old man asked.

The old man brought out an old magazine, on it was written 1999 with a red pen. He gave it to the young man to read a line he circled with a black ink.

What we fear is what kills us, it can be as little as a headlight.

Before he could speak, the old man said,"there really was no car with no headlights, our fears was it, in 1999 we moved with no fears and we were able to see, it's different now, even though we still have the headlights but incur fear in our heart making us go in darkness". He paused for a moment and smiled. "I notice you're afraid of something, let go of it, it's a hindrance to you".

The young gentleman kicked his car and was about to leave, but held the brake. "My friend had an accident because of a careless driver who flashed his headlights directed at his front mirror," he said to the old man who stared at him.

"Let go of your fear, the headlights are there to show you the way, but your courage is what makes them brighter".

The gentleman wasn't sure of it's meaning, but he realized he lacked the courage to let go of the past incident and that has made him unable to believe in himself. "Goodbye, old man, I'm taking the 1999 ideology, what's your name?".

"Adams," he said.

"I'm Philip" the young man said as he zoomed off.
