[WE113] Weekend-Engagement concept: Under the sea.

The oceans make up more than 70% of the surface of our planet. When talking about the deep sea, we see that the ocean is surrounded by mystery.

The first thing I would do on an exploration vessel would be to learn about the operation of your submarine, the many remote-controlled robots, the decompression chambers and learn how to navigate such a vessel.

I understand that incredible things like lakes, rivers and waterfalls at the bottom of the ocean have been discovered through these types of artifacts.

I would visit the strait between Iceland and Greenland in the Atlantic Ocean. There, the cold waters that travel to the south converge with warmer waters, being the water of lower temperature of higher density, this sinks according to the unevenness of the ocean floor, thus originating a waterfall that descends three kilometers to the bottom of the ocean. This waterfall is not visible because it is under the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, and according to experts it is three times higher than the Angel Falls (the highest on the surface of the earth), in Venezuela.

I believe that this natural spectacle would look like this:

I want to visit the Gulf of Mexico Ocean where the salt makes the water much denser than the surrounding water, and it concentrates forming lakes. These underwater lakes have large amounts of methane, toxic to most living things, but a food source for some bacteria and mollusks.

I would have to choose between going to the underwater volcanoes in Hawaii, Iceland, Japan and Spain, but with a lot of caution because these volcanoes are not only dangerous when they erupt, they can also cause earthquakes and tsunamis. Some of these volcanoes are located near the surface and in their eruptions they expel lava, rocks and ash clouds out of the sea. But they are mostly located in extremely deep areas of the oceans.

It must be understood that life in the deep ocean is not limited to bacteria and other microorganisms. There are animals of various types, with an appearance that is often very different from what we are used to seeing.
The creatures that live in the deepest parts of the ocean are adapted to the extreme conditions, especially the pressure and the lack of light and food.

I would like to take a closer look at a giant squid adapted to the depths, observe some marine animals capable of emitting light with their own body, thanks to internal chemical processes.

In this type of oceanographic vessels it is possible to discover the remains of ships that have been wrecked and sunk such as the Titanic, the battleship Bismarc or the Lusitania. If possible, I would visit the wreck of the Titanic.

It is to be understood that given the pressure exerted by the water, it is impossible for a human being to dive to such depths, therefore these ships are equipped with submarines and underwater robots, which are able to withstand the pressure, and are specially made to descend to the deepest parts of the ocean. All the above mentioned activities would be carried out in submarines, with state-of-the-art technological assistance.

Among its communication systems, the vessel has connectivity with satellites and can transmit live research in the depths of the ocean. A very important piece of equipment is the sonar capable of creating maps of the sea floor.

We know more about outer space than our seas and oceans. In these there is a lot of biodiversity and natural phenomena, it is known that they are an important deposit of metals such as zinc, copper, lead, silver and gold and petroleum. It is a fascinating place that still hides many secrets waiting to be discovered.

Thank you very much for reading my post, I wish my fellow community members who are participating in this weekend's initiative the best of luck.

Up or down

You have the choice of travelling to space for a week, or spending a week on an exploration vessel diving the depths of the ocean. What do you choose and why?
