We took the opportunity to go for a nice sunday afternoon walk along Portobello Beach promenade today.
It wasnt exactly beach weather - but not too bad in Edinburgh for February. No wind or rain and about 10 degrees C.
There is quite a nice promenade along the beach. The sea you see here is the North Sea - we are looking towards Norway in this angle !
It was a lot busier than I expected. There was a lot of people out for a walk. Many with their dogs, and a few kids playing on the beach. There was even one guy out having a swim without a wetsuit - pretty brave at this time of year !
The promenade probably dates from Victorian times (1800s) and as such there are some lovely large buildings along the seafront. It probably was a holiday destination back in those days as travel was much harder and more expensive.
The tide was quite far in - but not too high.
We spotted this near where we parked. Its called a bottle kiln, and is about all that remains from the old Portobello pottery works which was here. The black rings are iron bands to keep the structure together, as I guess it must get subjected to quite high internal pressure when it is fired up !
In the pic above you can see the entrance door where I guess they went in to set the fire and set things up.
We walked right along to the far end (around a mile or so) where you get to these lovely curved steps -but thats where the promenade ends, and so we turned back.
Above is the view looking back from the far end - it was a bit quieter up here.
And we passed the nice mural above along the way.
We stopped for some chips (fries) on the way back - and then went back to the car.
It was really nice to get out for a walk as a family this afternoon - we all really enjoyed it !
All the best form Scotland !!!
